Compatable Brake Boosters? 120-130

A few people have mentioned some expensive aftermarket brake boosters to replace my early-style non-functional brake booster. I've also noticed some brake upgrades that are more like the later volvo setups but were not volvo, per se.

Are there any make/model/years that have a booster setup compatable with an Amazon. Something I could generally bolt on with a limited about of re-routing hoses, etc, but no welding or cutting up the car?

Also, are there any sources for the later model 122 brake booster, and how much could I expect to pay for one?

Compatable Brake Boosters? 120-130

Something I noticed in a thread about a washer bottle location last week was posted by Yoqui(?).
The was a factory photo of a B20A equipped 122 (Identified as a 1968 but I think maybe a '69 or '70). The booster in that photo looks to me like the exact one on my '70 and '72 140.
Probably doesn't help you any, but I thought it was interesting.

The newest Skandix catalog/pricelist has boosters listed for $270.

My wife drove my car and was VERY surprised how hard you have to push the brake pedal on my Volvo. Has anyone install this booster? I like the idea of brand new; I'm wary of putting a used booster on my car.

Lots of people use the Lockheed booster (as sold by Skandix) on old Volvos -- never heard anything bad about it. I just spent the afternoon putting one on a customer's car, as a matter of fact.

My booster was removed by the previous owner - I understand that the original boosters would provide only a small improvement in braking so it wasn't worth fixing them.

Question: the replacement boosters that are now available (Scandix for example) - do they provide a greater amount of braking than the original boosters?

I don't believe the boosters actually give you a "greater amount" of braking. I always thought that stopping distances were the same between cars with and without boosters. Please correct me if I'm mistaken!

Actually, the booster simply reduces the amount of pressure you need to put on the brake pedal to slow/ stop the car.

Absolutely correct. Think of it this way: brakes don't stop the car; tires do. If you can lock up the wheels, you cannot have "more" brakes.

Only prone to install upside down if you dont have the installation manual available :-)

If you scroll halfway down this page, you will find photos of 2 available boosters, from Lockheed and PBR (not Pabst Blue Ribbon!)

I have the Lockheed setup on my sedan, never had a problem with it.

My (latino) way: Go and fish a Hillman Imperial on junkyards, take the servo and overhaul it. Of course, my wife like the servo (that was the reason to hunt for it). Lot less price, lot more work.

Ha-ha! Hillman Imperial! Hoo, that's good, Joaquin!

If I ever see a Hillman of any type running here in the 'States, I'll fall over in a faint on the spot. We have several Sunbeams (but good luck finding one of those, either) but the best likelyhood of finding a remote booster is to raid late 60's american cars and anything British-Leyland (Triumph, MG, etc...). Although with experience with those marques, you are as likely to get a POS there as whatever is already on your beast.

Aftermarket is really the only answer here.

Hillman Imperial... Might as well be a Humber ;)

Je,je, at last, some part are available on my country and not on US!. Usually I need to improvise here due we lack the facilities normally available on more developed countries. My excuses to the board members for my erroneous assumption :-)

(btw: Popular Mechanics Summer 1959 has a article about the "new" europeans on US: the hillman and the volvo 544 are featured on it - that mislead me).

No excuses necessary! We live in a global community. It just so happens that the debris of "civilization" drifts into different corners.

I have always marvelled at the differing vehicles when I travel. Stuff I never imagined and certainly never saw in the States are choking the roads of corners of the world I occasionally peek into.

Like VWs in Brazil... Stuff I never saw before. Toyotas in Barbados... Heck, those would barely qualify as golf carts hereabouts!

The diversity is important, revel in it!

As an aside, I need to remember you and your buddies next time I have a really thorny supply issue on some wacky part....

OK, I'm not 100% sure on this, but here it goes...

First ya gotta figure out the exchange rate; I use this website for that:

http://www.xe.com/ucc/

Today $1 USD = 7.46 Swedish Kronor (approximately). Therefore, 2750 SEK= $368.60

If you are a customer outside the European Union, You deduct 20% from this price, so it ends up costing around $295, not including the shipping from Sweden.

Skandix sounds like it's got a slightly better price for the Lockheed booster.

Skandix now has a Michigan warehouse in US. You can order a brrake booster from the following WEB site:
