Oil pressure gauge 200 1989

A while back I installed a small clock in the top space in the dash, and moved the oil pressure gauge which had been there to the space below it. Ever since then, for some reason now my oil pressure gauge gets pegged all the way to the right whenever I turn the key on. What did I do? I'm fairly certain there is no way that I could have plugged it back in incorrectly. How can I diagnose this one?

The gauge will do that if it loses its wire to the sender.

This may be a silly question, but where is the sender? Is it the sensor that lives above the alternator?

Sender is probably an older word for it than sensor, but that is the one.
However, given you were just in the dash, I'd start at that end first with the wire that connects to the G-for-Gauge terminal of the gauge.

Yeah, the oil guage has four connections on it.

          1) Ground

          2) Power

          3) Signal from sender

          4) Light Bulb

If it's getting a good Ground and Power (solid 12 volts or so), the needle will be maxed out to the right. The signal from the sender interrupts the circuit at the right interval so that the needle indicates the oil pressure. During normal operation, the sender interrupts the signal, so that the needle isn't maxed out, but doesn't interrupt it at such a high rate that it reads 0. Therefore, without the interruption from the sender, the guage will read maxed out all the way to the right.

Odds are you have one of the following problems:

          1) The wire that runs from the guage to the sender is disconnected at either end or broken (probably what happened with you moved the gauge).

          2) The sender is no longer functioning.

I like to advocate retracing steps. More often than not a new problem can be associated with some work just done, particularly when I do it.

Just yesterday our 83 was a no-start. What had I done last? Pulled the fuel pump relay to take a photo and put it back.

With good light, I could see the tang failed to keep the terminal in the socket that goes to the overboost pressure switch - simple terminal "pushback".

Yes, since it happened when I moved the gauge my first thought would be that something happened on that end. But I can't see anything wrong just yet. And I have a hard time believing that the sender just crapped out on me at exactly the time that I moved the gauge. What would the chances of that be? No way...
