You're going to find the biggest headache is going to be getting the clamp loose for the small hose that pig tails off the filler hose. I've done a few of them and have always managed to get them out so I am sure you can too. The only trick I have found is in trying to get the hose and clamp to spin around enough that you can get a tool on the screw head and back it out. The clamp is usually put on so that the head faces up and it is far enough over from the access hole that you cannot get a straight shot at it. You will find yourself working from the top and the bottom to get that hose out and replaced. I would not want to do one of those darn hoses laying on my back but you have to do what you have to do.

When you go back together make sure you put some kind of lube on the hose so it slides back on easy enough. You are going to be fighting enough stuff under there you don't want to have to wrestle the hoses back on as well.

the mechanic has a lift and wants to drop the tank, can you drop it partially? if you see this another qustion would be, does that small leak depressurize my fuel system and cause the main fuelpumpto wine, whir, hiss and thanks for responding

There was a bulletin on this years and years ago and as I recall it called for you to drop the differential down so you could get up there. You may be able to drop the gas tank to gain access to it but it can be done without it. The vapor recovery system on that tank is not sealed really, not like it is on a '96 and later OBDII car is. The short answer is no, it will not make your main pump whine, hiss, or whir. If it is doing that you probably have a problem with the pre-pump cavitating. The pre-pump hose may be ripped or knocked loose or the pre-pump could just be bad. Does it have a tendency to do it worse when you are below 1/2 a tank of gas? With the car running grab ahold of the inlet line to the main pump and squeeze it a little, can you feel the air bubbles going through it and are they in cadence with the noises that your main pump makes? If not then you could simply have a noisey main pump, but if so then you are pumping air as well as fuel into the main pump and everytime it hits an air pocket it whines.

Like I said in my previous post, I have always managed to get the clamp loose and the hose changed out without dropping fuel tanks or rear ends to accomplish it. But this is up to your technician and his tools and abilities. Is he a Volvo tech, has he done one of these before? I know I do not like having people tell me what to do but if he has no experience with this hose you might want to tell him that you can do it without dropping the tank. I access the clamp through the access panel in the trunk with a small bit and ratchet and then I do most everything else underneath with a long 1/4" extension.

thanks for the gas tank tips, i emailed your advice to the volvo tech, he said he has never seen this problem, you hit the nail on the head with the noise my fuel pump makes after the tank is about half full or empty, i have replaced in tank pump, main fuel pump, the fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump relay. still no success. i have reached under the car and felt the line leading into the main fuel pump and the noise seems to be quieted if i wrap my hand around that hose. the volvo tech just replaced the in tank fuel pump last week, cavitating fuel pump? i have a feeling that may be advice he doesnt want to hear, he thinks im neurotic, but everytime i see him the car is full of fuel. anyway thanks for the wealth of information it is greatly appreciated.

addendum to the last post, those parts went bad over time and have all been replaced out of need, its only because of all this maintenance did i start noticing the hum of the main fuelpump at all
