Help modifying CR-814 radio from '91 740 ito fit '86 740 700

I inquired about whether I can install a CR-814 cassette/radio from a 91 740 into a 86 740. I do not believe that the CR-814 came standard in the 86 740. I'm not the original owner of the 86 740, and when I acquired it it had a SANYO CD/cassette player installed in it. My vehicle was broken into last week and the CD/cassette was stolen, so I went to a junkyard and got a CR-814 for $35, including the wire connection that connects to the back of the CR-814 (see photo). The 86 still has the amplifier under the steering column (I saw it) and it looks untouched, ever, actually (not surprising, considering where it is). So I've taken some photos and hopefully someone can advise me on what I need to do to adapt the radio to fit into my vehicle. I also got the CR-814 case housing, the storage area that fits directly under it (that has the cigarette lighter on the left side), and the ashtray. The hardware all looks like it'd fit, it's the wiring that I know I'm going to have problems with. Your help will be greatly appreciated. There is one benefit, though, to driving around without a working radio/tape in the car, you can hear little things like the slightest exhaust leak I heard, and a few rattles that I'm going to track down and resolve as well.

    If your CR -814 came from a '91 940, it probably has : 1. an antenna connection, similar to your other radio, 2. the round 6-pin din connector for the amplifier, and 3. a 14-pin offset rectangular connector to the vehicle harness. Your '86 740 would have ordinarily had an antenna conector, the 6-pin din amp conneccotr, a 9-pin connector (with or without all the pins actually used), and several separate ground, power, and other single or double wires in addition.

    Ther was a dealer-available adapter for retrofitting radios and other audio equipment from '88-92 to the earlier vehicles. Part number is here on the site somewhere--spend some time playing with the search function at the bottom right of the page. Or, if you have access to a junkyard, you can make your own.
    Most of the Volvos from late '88 through mid '92 should have the 14-pin harness connectors under the dash--if you can get there, get both the connector for the radio and the connectors for the amplifier; they're different, but adaptable. Note that the '88 and later amps use a separate din cable, rather than the built-on cable in the pre-'88s. get as much wiring attached to the connectors as you can. And get the factory wiring diagrams for your car! They'll pay for themselves on this project, and save your butt many times on any future projects.


    the pin-out designations for the 14-pin, both amp and head unit, are here on the board--use the search function. The 14-pin connectors have tiny numbers moulded in the plastic to make it easier.

    The pin-out and other wiring descriptions for the pre-'88 radios are also somewhere on the board. Get out your pencil and start drawing your wiring after you print out the prior posts on these subjects.

    Your '86 amp may be either 2- or 4-channel, depending on what the original owner wanted. If it's a two-channel, and you want to upgrade and rewire, you can substitute a 4-channel amp--same din connection, but obviously different output wiring.
    The CR-814 is set up to run 2(fairly low power) channels for the dash speakers direct from the head unit, and 4 from the amplifier. Obviously the power of the latter four depends on the size of the amp. If you're at the junkyard scrounging wiring bits, look around for a 960 amplifier-these were 4 channels x 40 watts, and pretty good stuff. Get all the surrounding wiring if you find one of these amps. Otherwise, the amps from the 940s will fit the same 14-pin connector as the 960 amp, but the 940 amp is 4 x 20.     It should be "plug and play." I believe your 86 came stock with the td6141, which is interchangable with the cr814.

    There will be a rectangular connector from the cars wiring harness that connects to the back of the cr814. From the cr814 there is a din connector (round six pin wire, and the larger of the two) that connect to the amp. From the amp there is another rectangular connector that leads to the speakers.

    When the aftermarket radio was installed, the amp was probably bypassed and the speaker output from the radio connected directly to the speaker wires down by the amp. Hopefully they did not cut out the rectangular speaker wire connector at the amp.

    Sorry if this is poorly worded or confusing...


    The cr814 will control an alpine changer, and has an internal amp for an additional pair of speakers...

      If you go to the TECHNICAL area for photos, you can see three photos of what I am working with. I'm not very familiar with the terminology, but it doesn't look like PLUG AND PRAY to me. The connectors are different, unless something was cut out which I am not aware of. Thanks again for your help.
