HELP! 740 Auto Won't move 700

I was about 3 miles from home when making a left turn I heard a thud and lost all forward movement. The engine revs but the transmission doesn't seem to be catching.

I checked my transmission fluid and it's fine. Checked fan belts and timing belts and all seems fine. There is no movement regardless of which gear I select. I didn't have any previous symptoms or warning that there was a problem.

If anyone can help resolove this it would be greatly apprecitated! Is this something that I can accomplish on my own?!

Thanks

jerry

I think that you have a fried torque convertor. Does your idle speed increase with the selector in 'Park' ?

Another poster suggested that the problem lies in the diff. To check this out, put the car in neutral and see if you can get it to roll by pushing it. On the other hand, if you have a frozen u-joint or clutch pack (the aw-70 does not use bands), this is not a reliable test. Disconnecting the driveshaft from the diff would eliminate those two variables.

Good luck! Please let us know what you find...

Well checked to see if drive shaft spinned while in gear. Unfortunately the drive shaft does not spin while in "D" or any other gear. Did notice a "whirring" noise as I was shuttnig down the engine. Kinda like something decelerating/spinning down. The car does move when I put it in to neutral or even drive.

Would the tachometer be any indicator that something was up prior to this? Reason I ask this is that I was experinencing intermitent tachometer functionality. One minute, hour, day it would work then it wouldn't.

Thanks to everyone for all their help!

      Jerry

Sounds to me like your transmission took a dump on you... check the shifter connection to the transmission, if that checks out okay, take it to a qualified shop for diagnosis.

Will take a look. But as for taking it anywhere that's not possible since it doesn't drive and I just got it home.

I was reading in a Chilton manual something about a band in the transmission. Anyone familiar with this? I'm hoping I can fix this myself as I'm on a limited budget. I've been investing time and money in coverting the diesel engine to run on waste vegetable oil. This weekend I was set to finish the conversion.

      Thanks

      Jerry

        do you have reverse?
with it in gear, does the driveshaft turn?
The transmission(assuming you are Auto) has a problem with the forward clutch self destructing. I have also seen two diesel trannys fail by stripping the splines on the torque convertor.
As it happened on a turn, I kinda suspect a rearend problem.
