Thermostats ????? 1800 1972

I have a question about temperature ranges of the thermostats. Chilton calls for a 190° and Haynes calls for a 170°. Any idea what the right temp should be for a 1972 B20F ?

Thanks
Clem

Went through the T-Stat nighmare myself. Too hot, too cold. Finally ordered a couple of 170s from KG Triming in Sweden.Just right in my 70 E. Winter AND Summer.

Go with what you can find that is 170 degrees or higher. There are some 160 degree ones that are for sale, but that is typically too cold for optimal combustion supposedly. From my local auto parts stores I can find 180 and 190 degree thermostats I think. In any case, I'd be going with the 180 degree, or if I could find a 170, I'd go with a 170... But there's nothing wrong with running a 190 deg T stat as far as I know.

If you want the engine temp to be 170°, put in a 170° thermostat.
If you want it to be 190°, etc etc.
Do not use the Chilton book. Get you a VOLVO book. Haynes is better
but Volvo is best. They show up on ebay from time to time.
I think they can also be ordered from Volvo.

= The Green Manuals. You can download a copy from:

Low density scanning, but ok to read on screen.

      Happy volving

Thermostat range may also depend on your location. If it doesn't get too hot where you are and is very cold in the winter you could opt for a higher setting, allowing the engine to run warmer. In hot temperature areas you may want to run a little cooler. Maybe that is why the disparity between temps of which you spoke.
