Air Compressor Chirping Noise 200 1985

Hello. I am going to attempt to explain what is going on with our 85 240 wagon - my husband is not here right now and he is much more car knowledgable than I am, but thought I would give it a try.
About 6 months ago we had the air compressor changed in our 240 wagon as it was bad and the car was not drivable. We also had the air conditioning converted at the same time. The car now has quite a loud chirping sound whenever the air conditioner is on. About a month ago I noticed this only when the conditioner knob was in the red or when the car was started with the air conditioner turned on. I also notice that the car gives one chirp whenever it starts up. We havent been really using the air conditioner much until recently, so didnt notice this before.
My husband suggested it may be either a faulty clutch or something with the belt. Could it be that the compressor they gave us is bad, used, etc? Would you take the car back to the shop and ask that they fix it, or not bother since it's been 6 months now.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what this might be?

Thanks much for taking the time to read this.

Jen

Jen, (great name by the way, been married to a "Jen" for 22 years now) I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it is far more likely that you have a harmonic balancer that is spun. The compressor was changed out fairly recently and the belt was probably right and tight then. The "one chirp in the a.m. when starting" is the classic slipping dampner. I hope it is just your belts but it is unlikely. I have sold a ton of dampners on red engines for complaints identical to yours. Volvo list price on that is around 195.00 and you can expect someone to charge you between 1-2 hours to diagnose and replace it. If the hubby has a timing light or access to one tell him to hook it up and shine it on the dampner with the engine running, the timing mark on the dampner for the #1 cylinder should be stationary and visible. If it has slipped the mark will either not be visible (because it is now in the wrong location) or if it is real loose you will see the mark as it goes by which means the inner ring is spinning at a different speed from the outer ring, not good.

    Good Luck,
    Mark

I agree with John. It sounds like a loose belt. What you do next depends on whether your air compressor work came with a guarantee. Check the receipt from 6 months ago. If covered, then take it back for an inspection of the repair work.

If not covered, then check the belt for tightness. I believe 1/4 to 1/2 inch of play is acceptable.

    Best of luck,

    Tony

this has been mentioned by others in other posts -
when the rubber bushings in the compressor mounting bracket start going bad, the compressor itself can swing out of position a little. then the compressor pulley doesn't line up properly with the drive belt.
you can sight down the belt, compare the plane the belt is on to the plane the pulley is on, and see if this is happening.
if it is, that may be the source of the noise you have.

Something with the belt sounds right. Spritz a bit of water on the belts while it is chirping. When it goes away you can tell him you agree with his diagnosis.
