Frustrating 940 idle problem-HELP! 900 1995

My daughter's 1995 940 wagon has been remarkably trouble free for the past 3 years, so I have been a non-existant member of this forum. Now I need some help.
My daughter's 940 stalled on her way home from school last week. It started back up immediately, but stalled again. I took it out, and sure enough, it did the same thing to me. Tach goes to "0", all the dash lights come on. Cranks right back up and runs great for a mile or 2, then the same thing happens. Over the next few days I: replaced the crank position sensor, radio suppression relay, fuel pump relay, fuel filter, checked all the fuses, checked the fuel pump, changed the mass airflow meter, and swapped out the fuel injection control unit. Plus I checked the alternator, battery, fuel pump, coil, etc. It drives like an absolute dream, until I stop. It will idle perfectly for 5-10 minutes then it just quits. No stutter, no hesitation, no bucking. It's like all the power just stops. 19 times out of 20 it has started right back up. One time, I had to wait 5 minutes.
I took to my independent mechanic, who replaced a disintergrated tee fitting and checked all the relay connections. The car appeared to be fixed- it ran for 2 hours without cutting out. BUT, this morning, it started doing the same thing. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to get all the details in.
Thanks
Philc

    Hello Philc

There is a strong possibility that you have a failing Ignition Power Stage. This item is located near the front of the driver's front fender well, next to the battery. Try pressing on the top of the module - the car may stop when you do that. This will confirm the failure.

    Bye for now

    Doug

    Fixed it!! 900 1995

Thanks Steve and Spook. It was the power stage (Also known as the ignition module or ignition amplifier). Anyway, when I showed your posts to my mechanic, he wiggled a few wires and VOILA! that was it. Car runs like a dream.
4 hours of my time... not much
    2.5 hours diagnosis $150
    1 ignition amp $125
    Happy daughter and wife priceless!
    THIS BOARD IS AWESOME!!

    Phil

Check the ignition power stage on the driver's fender, which amplifies ignition pulses and activates the coil. If this fails, your ignition drops dead.

    Dear philc,

Good p.m. and may this find you well.

As you've checked/replaced the fuel system items most likely to cause sudden cut-out, this is pretty surely electrical in origin.

    Please check:
    (a) battery terminal for corrosion, especially on the negative side.
    (b) distributor, for dirt/corrosion/water infiltration (was the "T" fitting, that disintegrated, in the windshield washer system, at the rear of the engine? If so, a spray of window washer liquid could have contaminated the distributor and/or its wires)
    (c) plug and coil wires, for corrosion/cracked insulation
    (d) ignition power stage (on the inner fender, behind the driver's side headlight (US/Canada models).
    (e) the ground strap at the back of the engine (a loose ground can cause sudden power loss).

    Hope some of this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spoook
