240 wagon-should I buy it? 200

Hi Everyone,

I just found an '83?? ( has the white distributor cap, chrysler ignition) for sale for $150. The owner says that he bought it from a Volvo enthusiast about a year ago and it has been sitting since. It runs, but misses and has no power. The owner says that the car was overheated, and he believes that the head gasket needs replaced. I'm familiar with how to do this job on a B230, so it should be similar on this wagon. My thinking is to buy the car, pull head and take to the machine shop, order a new gasket, head bolts, timing belt and water pump and put it all back together to have a nice car. It's got an M46 manual trans, no rust whatsoever, 217K miles, new tires, good exhaust, and good brakes. The driver's seat is slightly torn, but all of the rest of the interior is pretty good. There's also no accident damage. I really think that it's a great deal, but I need to get the running to get it home ( 150 miles away).

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Sounds like a deal if you want to work a little on it. If there's no oil/coolant mix then the head gasket could be ok. Does the engine run smoothly at any speed? Are there any weird noises, knocking, pops, etc? It could be something as simple as a vacuum leak. I'd change plugs, wires, etc., check for leaks, and see how it runs.

Do you know where the AMM is located on this model. It's not in the normal place ( like on my '86 240). Is this engine a B21? It looks slightly different than my B23 and B230 under the intake manifold ( looks like the air comes in from under the manifold. I'll check the plugs and vacuum lines. It acts like it is running on 2 or three cylinders.

      Thanks,
      Dave

If its a 83 it should be front right near the battery. Check for air leaks in tubing after AMM, bad to crack. If you can take a known good AMM with you that might be worth a shot as well. If it is different than your B23 then its a B21 if its orginal. If the car hasn't been started in a year there may be fuel problems as well. You might want to drain the gas, put in fresh. Good luck with it.

you could change the plugs, wires, oil and check for vacume leaks. Then you could tourqe the head bolts, make sure the brakes are ok, and hit the road. I'd be surprised if you have any problems, at least for the 150.

So, are you saying that it might run better if I just loosen the head bolts, and retorque them without changing the head gasket? There's no oil in the coolant, or vice versa. I think it's a heck of a deal for the price.

      Thanks for the input.

      Dave
