To Buy or Not to But.....Suggestions? 200 1985

Alright so one of my buddies sent me to a shop the other day to look at a volvo. They have a 1985 240 turbo with get this, 85000 original miles. It is automatic and looks in great condition. Nice turbo wheels, nice leather, nice car all around, but...the guy says that the only thing wrong with the car is the turbo is bad. How can I tell if the turbo is the only thing bad, will the engine still run even if the turbo is bad? Is it easy to replace a turbo? What would you all pay for this car? Thanks for any suggestions and help!
-Jeremy

If the turbo has blown seals and been driven for a while like this (though not much is 'for a while' with only 85K on the clock) you may need to replace the catylitic converter because it is clogged. An expensive part. If you are buying the car for fun, no automatic is a better deal than holding out for a manual. If the thing is mint, you might spend up to $1,000 for it.

I would be checking that thign out!!!!!

85's were the last year of the turbos, and I have heard speculation that they were the fastest, some screwy thign with compression ratio, idk, just personal accounts with the cars of that year.

However, I just dug in and replaced a turbo on my car this summer. They can go bad by, the oil seals wearing out, you'll notice shaft play and you'll lose oil thru the turbo, into the exhaust or intake manifold. you can check for shaft play by pulling back the hose on the intake side of the turbo, the hose that comes from the airbox, and wiggling the nut back and forth. it should be minimal. if theres some play there, the oil seals are most likely bad. if they are too bad, the blades start rubbing on the housing, and they get torn up. if this happens on the exhaust side, like mine, don't worry about, however it will be more expensive to rebuild. on the intake side i'd be a little concerned if it wasn't intercooled but its an 85 and came factory intercooled so any debris will be caught in the intercooler, and never made it to your engine where it would do damage possibly. you'll be able to see with a mirror if the blades are hitting the sides of the turbo.

The car will still run with a bad turbo. if you take it for a test drive, watch the boost gauge. this will help with ur diagnosis of the turbo as well. if it pushes far into the yellow, it still makes boost which means it is in a lot better shape than if the gauage never left the black, which means teh turbo is seized. if its seized, the bearings are shot.

to rebuild the turbo u have options. i sent mine to herman at cherry turbos and paid 600 with shipping, but my turbo was in bad shape. fins were hitting on the exhaust side. however, hermans word is grade A, and i didn't want to do this job again soon, and won't have to. the quality is amazing. looks brand new!!!! you can rebuild one yourself for 100 a kit, if the turbo is in decent shape yet, just needs oil seals for example.

its more of an involved job, id love to help you if you were in wisconsin, but most people aren't. keep in mind, you'll get raped for labor at a shop.

hard to say what to pay for it without seeing pictures.

    any questions, do ask,
    later,
    smith

Sounds like a really sweet turbo, my best advice would be, to find a local volvo shop (not a dealership if you can avoid it, some are ok) and have them check it bumper to bumper. A non functioning turbo could cause some problems, ie engine damage. I've seen a turbo toyota supra spit parts into the engine, big mess. Replacing it seems straight forward, Plenty of rebuilds on the net, maybe someone on the board knows the people to check out. If it's a cheap deal, i'd have to say, take it! A guy was selling his turbo in louisville for 500 bucks with a blown turbo last year, I should have snagged it! oh well....good luck..
