What can I salvage??? Parts Car for someone else??? 200 1989

Hi all....

Today I bought a 1989 244DL to replace my "totaled" 84 244DL. The 84 was a victim of a hit and run accident and my insurance company cut me a check for the value of the car prior to the accident. I still have the 84 and I'm wanting to save as many parts from it for spares for the 89. Can anyone help me with parts I should save from the 84 before I lay her to rest in the boneyard???? I know I can save the AMM, the AIC and the external fuel pump and filter. Are there any relays that are the same? Any other parts that I should save???

I would love to pull the whole engine out and keep it as the engine is in awesome condition. It's got around 175k miles on it and I just drove the car from Ohio to Texas last month in one day without any quirks or hesitations from the engine. Unfortunately I don't have the storage space to keep the engine.

Maybe I should try to sell the car as is for a parts car?? I really hate to send the old girl to the boneyard as the engine and drivetrain have plenty of years left on them. But I don't know what the demand would be for this engine and tranny combo.

Help me out here....

thanks

If your '89 does not have the air flap down by the driver's feet, you can take the one off your '84 and mount it in the '89. I did this on my '88 and really like have it. Door pockets are nice to keep.

I hate to pop your bubble but there is not a great deal of stuff, especially between the engines, that is transferable.

    mass meter NO
    IAC NO
    Fuel Pump YES
    pump relay NO
    OD relay NO
    Control units NO

You're going to find that most of the stuff that will swap from one to the other will be body parts an interior stuff. If one has nicer wheels and tires than the other you might want to swap those out, grab the rear view mirror, maybe one or two of the grab handles so you can put one on the driver's side as well. Take a look at the interior plastic stuff like maps pockets, trim rings, the panels that go over your knees (under the glove box), horns probably interchange.

Your other problem here is that you are going the wrong way, you are trying to see if there is anything worth saving off of the '84 to put on the '89. You need to be doing it the other way around. I just did this on my daughter's 85, had a customers car that was totaled and going to the boneyard and she gave me the green light to swap out anything I felt like I needed. The daughter got new wheels, tires, hub caps, cloth interior, later styly side view mirrors, newer fuel pump/filter assembly, map pockets, visors, bumpers, mouldings to go with the bumper, and tail lamp assemblies. I gave a good look under the hood but there was just nothing that crosses over and my kid is running a B230 whereas you've got a B23 in that '84 (even less compatability). Mad dog that I am I even gave serious conderation to doing a complete engine, trans, injection, ignition swap between the two but it just was not doable in the time frame.

Hope I did not pop your bubble too hard there just is little to no commonality under the hood on those two cars.

      Mark,

thanks for your input. I really didn't have a bubble going as I knew that with the 5 years of difference between the two that I might not be able to save much. The 84s interior leaves much to be desired so I won't be grabbing anything out of there. I was kind of hoping to be able to save some relays though. Oh well.

      thanks again.

        Matt,

Right on, I know where you are coming from. Amazing how little damage it takes for the insurance company to total an otherwise perfectly good 20+ year old car huh? Hope that your old V was the only thing that got totalled in your hit and run. Good luck with your "new" '89 car, I think you will find that it is an even better 240 than your '84. I sure like the B230 and the later LH and EZK systems, it just made a great little car even better.

        Mark
