Fuel pump relay question 200 1982

1982 242 K-jet

Couple days ago quit on my wife. Engine turns over just fine, won't start. Has new plugs, wires, ditributor cap etc. I have located the fuel pump relay. When I turn the key to on without starting the car, the relay clicks, I can hear the pump spin up, then it clicks again about 2 seconds later and I can here the pump stop. Is this normal, or can I assume that it's safe to say the relay is having problems?

As always, everyone's sage advice is the main thing keeping my bank account intact. Thank you!

Normal.
The pumps kick on for 1-2 seconds to pressure up then they shut off.
I think you need to look elsewhere.

Fuel pump relay question 200 1982

Hello,

Have you placed a jumper from fuse 5 to fuse 7 to see if the car starts. This bypasses the relay. If that does not work please read my old post about my 82 issue:

I have an 82 MPG with Chrysler ignition (white distributor cap) and it does not have a Ballest resistor. The voltage comes from fuse post 11 (hot side) to a 2 plug connector on the passenger firewall (blue wire) and then it goes to the coil term #15 (brown wire) via a 1 plug connector. I have had two occasions in the last ten years were that connectors has corroded out and blocked the 12volts to the coil. When I cleaned the connectors, the car ran great. This connector is located were the ballest used to be according to my Volvo green book. Find that connector and clean it up. It seems to be a problem unique to 82. Hope that helps.

If you have the above situation you can bypass the connector by connecting a wire from the battery + terminal to the #15 terminal of the coil (brown wire) and see if the car runs. If you have Bosch cap (red) check the wiring at the ballest resistor and make sure the ballest tests ok. You can use the voltage jumper to the coil with the Bosch to see if it starts, just don't leave it on or you might damage the coil. It makes no differance on the Chrysler, but the jumper lead is not fused so it should be temporary. Hope this helps.

Jumped 5 and 7. no joy.

Jumped positive terminal to brown wire on coil. No Joy.

Distinct smell of gas when trying to start for a couple minutes (don't think it's from flooding - didn't touch the gas pedal). No leaks that I can find anywhere.

How old is the timing belt and did you check to see if it slipped or snapped. Also check that the wires from the ICU to the distributor (Hall Effect device) did not get loose. Thats the small connector by the distributor. Check the connectors I mentioned on my first post, they also carry the ICU voltage and coil signal (term 1 of coil) to the ICU.

I checked the timing belt, it is showing wear, but the teeth are firmly set and it has good tension, it looks like it's about time to change it, but I don't think it is the problem.

I checked and cleaned all of the terminals and connectors on the coil, but will check the connetions on the ICU.

Thanks, back with answers this evening.
