In-tank pump noise...Question 200 1983

Hi,
I have a question about my intank pump on my 240 turbo 83, on idle I can hear the noise coming from this pump and I notice the noise is not constant, is like I have the emergency lights on, like BSSSS bsss BSSSSS bsss BSSSS (the upper letters is loud noise) is this a electrical problem or my pump will goes out? and about 1 year I cant hear the 1/2 second bzzz when I turn the ignition on, is a bad fuel pump relay?

Thank you for any advice,

Edwin

In-tank pump noise...Question 200 1983

My intank pump makes a noise that is not constant as well. It can be a little unnerving because it makes you think you have something going bad....

after 280,000 miles you start to think that about a lot of things.

my general rule of thumb has been that if it isn't broken don't fix it...

unfortunately that means you might be stuck somewhere without a fuel pump.

but mine has been running for 2 years now with that noise so I'm figuring it's probably ok.

I wouldn't worry about it AND I would get a spare fuel pump relay to have in your glove box in case you do end up with a bad relay... it's easier to switch out in a pinch than the intank pump .

Agreed -- a dead in-tank pump won't leave you stranded, but a dead relay could!
