headlight switch positions mysteriously changed 200

Ever since I disconnected the headlight switch (i'm not even sure what for now it was so long ago) for my '86 240 the switch positions aren't the same.
From left to right there is now OFF, ON, and OFF again, whereas it should be
OFF, PARK, ON. As a result, the lights do not shut off with the key, a feature I'd like to have back.

I didn't do a search on this because it seemed like an oddball problem....

any thoughts would be welcomed.

The plastic peice on the back of the switch are notorious for being loose due to the crimp on the main housing being bad.since you've had it off I suspect that to be the cause.Remove it again and check that the switch hasn't rotated inside the housing.make sense ?????

I suspect you have a shorted Main Headlight Relay. On the '86 (first year for it) it lives in what can be a damp, dark hole.

See my post to Ricko at:
    http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=951672
for more detail and part number.

On 2nd thought, it would make more sense to check the switch wiring, since that was when this all began:

    30 - Green/Red (hot, unfused +12V input)
    X - Yel/Blk (Key On +12V input)
58 - White (output to Fuses 15 and 16 for Parking Lights in PL position)
56 - Yellow (output to pick HL relay in HL position)

A reversal of the output wires (White and Yellow) might be the problem, assuming the relay is OK.

Thanks for the info - I checked FCP Groton for the relay part and their chart shows it to be behind the middle 2 heater vents. I'll have a look down by the hood release anyway (I think that's where you were describing)

"I checked FCP Groton for the relay part and their chart shows it to be behind the middle 2 heater vents. I'll have a look down by the hood release anyway..."

The Bentley manual shows it in both locations. I don't know when it changed, but can say from experience that the '86 does not have it in the heater vent location.

Some have found it "down in the hole" I described, others found it clipped to a rail on the inside of the firewall above the driver's feet.

Not really relevant to the 86, but on our 91 it is clipped to the rail above the front console behind the center vents.

Here's a visual cue for you, Bruce.

Thanks Art, but I guess the wire colors to #124 changed at some time too -- I don't see the familiar (to me) red/green power feed wire.

And starting with the '91 diagram in Bentley, a different circuit is also shown on grids F1 & G1, with a new item (133)called a "Dip/dim regulator". Can't see what's feeding 124 terminal 30 there, thanks to the vertical grid line.

            Bottom line -- I don't know much after '86.

It is a lousy pic. The relay with the white socket is the one - has the traditional colors. The big green/red is in front, but you can't make out the red stripe. The yellow is easy to see; the blue/white, white, and black wires are just visible.

The WDM still shows the old location, down near the bottom of the steering column, in its relay locator drawing. But you can see the harness build would not permit it to be moved that far by some mischievous hider of relays.

The "Dim/dip" is UK market I believe. The regulator is drawn to represent a dimmer using a solid state switching regulator. There's a page in the '91 WDM titled "Reduced-intensity dipped beams (Dim-dip), United Kingdom".

Here's another view. Just couldn't get things in focus that day...
