no interior lights at all!! fuses are good....i can't figure it out... 200 1986

ok, i've finally got this car up and running with front suspension and all replaced and aligned...now i get to the first annoying problem that i've discovered driving at night.. there are absolutely no interior lights working at all, i've gone through and cleaned the fuse assembly with a wire brush and made sure all were good and clean. i have no dash lights, no instrument cluster lights, no dome light, and no hatch light. my headlights and tail lights do work though. i tested for current at the dimmer switch and i'm not getting any juice at all from that source. where else do i look to try to figure this thing out?!?! Thanks!!

Pull out the headlight switch and take a look there first. Interior light current goes from there to the dash dimmer switch. Unless it is my car! There are no wires on the dimmer!

hmmmm well i just had the entire dash out of my car doing a blower motor replacement and it took a while to get a part in so i have been guessing a bit what goes where.....do you remember how many wires went to your headlights? i have a double brown wire and a double red and white striped wire that i was guessing that they were to the dimmer, but maybe i'm totally wrong... any suggestions?

The dimmer, on my wiring diagram, gets a green (from headlight switch) and a brown to the dim-able lights.

That brown wire carries voltage to all the illuminating lights, each also has a black wire for ground.

The dimmer is a good suspect - they do fail. Get a handful from a junkyard, same part on 240s from 1980 to 1993.

The dome light and hatch lights are wired so that the switch is on the ground side. See what happens if you unscrew and pull out the door switch and you ground the wires there.

BTW, if you disconnect a wire from a door switch, first tie a string arond the wire. Those wires are real short, and if one snaps back inside the hole you will have a large PITA of a job to get the @#$@% thing back out.

Good Luck,

Bob
