question about removing a/c 200 1979

My local wrecking yard has cars without a/c (and I want to remove mine for increased MPG), and I've been told (from the brickboard) to pick up the P/S pump bracket of these cars...but the cars at the yard w/out A/C have a different pump (is this just because they are older?). Will the more modern style of pump (black tear-drop shaped) work with this?

Thanks in advance!

Lou

If you want the mileage to improve,do not use the a/c. I believe the difference between no compressor and not engaging the clutch would be miniscule at best. Even when using the a/c it probably only saps 3 or 4hp. Plus there is the theory that you actually get better mileage with the a/c on and the windows rolled up. Especially at freeway speeds. Plus if and when you decide to sell it the resale value would be higher with a/c. But I live in Florida so a/c is almost mandantory.

Just for grins why don't you do your normal driving route for one tankful of gas with the a/c off and one tankful with the a/c on and compare the difference. It might be less than you think.

Good luck. Jim

I've done this conversion twice and never noticed a difference in pumps. the pieces you need are the plate that bolts onto the block plus the pieces that bolt to the pump. Make a good sketch or take a phote of the setup before you remove it because the orientation of the plate is tough to figure out once it is ou of the car. Those brackets are hard to find BTW.

There's a little retro-fit kit you can use that's available from IPD, the after market Volvo parts seller. Call them at 1-800-444-6473 or go to IPDUSA.com In their current newest catalog on page 39 you'll see the adaptor which is used when the air conditioning compressor dies which is basically what you will need when you do eliminate it. This kit is called "Air Conditioning Compressor Bypas Kit". It's $39.00 You should get a copy of their catalog. It's full of parts and great tips for some of the jobs that your car will need to have done in time.

Wow, that sounds like the easiest option...I'll check that out and post my results with it. Thanks!
