generator woes 120-130

5 weeks ago generator gave out. Hadn't noticed the light come on initially. Maybe it didn't. Battery is newish and it cranked slower and slower. Pulled and charged battery. Car started right up, but then noticed generator light glowing brightly. Pulled generator and check brushes - I had replaced these when I rebuilt motor less than 10K ago. Looked great. cleaned up commutator. Reinstalled and still that bright red light. Swapped in a spare. Light out, and things were fine for three weeks, and now the light is back on brightly again. Other than regulator (I have a new one but and loathe to install until I know what's the source of this problem) what else might be wrong?
Anybody know the right answer?
Grounds are good. wire connectors clean and good.

thanks

Solved for now 120-130

generator light blinked when turn signal engaged. cleaned spade connectors - these all looked pretty good anyway. rechecked ground strap and wire brushed all. still bright light on dash. last resort, hard taps on generator body applied with hand sledge to 30" section of 3/4" oak closet pole and that did the trick. brushes hanging up? thanks all.

If it blinks with the turn signal you have a fuse or fuse box problem.
These are pretty common.
Is your ground wire good? The rubber bushings insulate the mount.
Have you had the generator tested? O'Reilley's and AutoZone do this free.

George
By ground wire, do you mean the ground strap from battery to body, bell housing bolt to body or ground wire on gerator to regulator? I belive all to good. I removed and cleaned all three.
mounting bracket rubber bushings were new at rebuild.

I'll do the turn signal test.

Check the ground wire. I went on holiday and came back to a similar situation. The braided grounding wire from the battery to the body was at fault. I still think it was weird as it wasn't fraid or had any visual evidence of failing. Unfortunately that was 15 years ago and I fdid not think to run a continuity test on it.

I'll check this again. Don't have a spare grounding strap in the "culch" (?) pile. thanks
