Coolant loss update 700

90 760T 213,000

Found out where my coolant system is leaking - the heater hose that runs into the block underneath the intake manifold.

Questions:

1)If I keep close watch on the temp gauge, will it be safe to drive for a few days till I can get the hose from the local dealer?

2) Is it relatively easy to replace the hose without removing the intake manifold. (Looks VERY tight)

3)Should I go ahead and replace the heater valve and the other hose (leading to firewall)?

NOTE:
I replaced the old plastic radiator with an IPD metal one at ~150,000 miles along with upper and lower radiator hoses.

Many thanks for any advice!

Fill the cooling system up with water and open the reservoir cap to eliminate pressure while you drive. Replace both heater hoses and the water valve. You can do it without removing the manifold.

Keep in mind that when you drive without the pressure cap the water will most likely suddenly boil when you shut down and vomit coolant out the reservoir, this is normal because the internal engine heat has no place to go, coolant no longer circulating and not under any pressure boils.

      Thanks Steve......

Volvo OEM or FCPGroton?? I understand the OEM components are more durable?

I always go OEM for the heater hoses since they are somewhat of a bear to change. They are of exceptional quality and will last as long as the originals, the extra cost can be spread over the years.

As Steve mentioned, get a new heater valve. I use the ones that FCP sells but I've heard that Volvo designed a new one that is either all metal or all plastic...the FCP one (is half plastic/half metal) but good all the same.

To install the heater valve you'll need to cut one of the hoses, a little daunting for such an expensive hose (there are white marks where the valve goes), just line it up with the old hose/valve unit.

        Glad you found the leak,
        Bean
