V90 needs a new timing belt S90-V90

Hi, i just bought a 1998 V90 with 72k miles. The first thing I want to do is replace the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump. Is this the sort of thing i can take to any mechanic to get done? Or is there some sort of Volvo-specific wizardry that will require a full-time volvo tech do do this operation? This is my first Volvo, so I have no idea how complex a timing belt change will be.

Thanks,
Eric

I'd hold off on the water pump if it's not showing any signs of failure. I've got 158k on the origianl pump. I'd swap out that timing belt asap though.

    Good Luck.

V90 needs a new timing belt (UPDATE) S90-V90

Well, the Volvo dealer wants $500 for the 70k mile service. This includes the belt, tensioners, and pulleys. Not the water pump. I asked all the local volvo specialists and they wanted over $700 with the water pump. Is there any way to check the the pump for play myself?

I've had water pumps start to go bad in other cars, and I could always tell by the sound (sounds just like a skateboard with bad bearings). But I guess i want to check it myself for play.

I think my friend's wife's uncle (how's that for three degrees of separation?) is a volvo specialist. I might get a quote from him, too.

The timing belt is the only critical item at 70k miles. The tensioner, idler should be replaced at 140. I would go ahead and do the pump at 140 as well. I replaced mine at 140 and it showed some signs of starting to go.

Volvo or any dealer service is going to charge alot for stuff that you can routinely do yourself. I pretty much stopped taking the car to the dealer after it past 50k. I have found a good indpendent shop to do the things that I think are beyond me. The timing belt on this car is definately a DIY project. Much has been written up on how to do it. You can save yourself considerable $$ and I think in the long run, enhance your satisfaction with the car if you do as much of your own maintenance as possible. Running back to the dealer for everything that breaks or needs attention will sour you on this car. FYI, my 97 just turned 183k the other day...

the dealer I worked at got $260 to do the belt, tensioners were an as needed item, water pumps almost never, and cam and crank seals on certain years

Forgive my intrusion, but there is no need to replace the water pump unless there are signs of play. Mine has 115K on it and is still tight. This is not your 240. Get a Volvo technician to determine this; one who knows these cars.

WIth 72K on the dial, are you sure the belt hasn't been changed at it's required 70K or are you really 2K over and flirting with disaster?

I asked the previous owner about the belt, and they have never had it done. So they dropped the price of the car, understanding that I would have to get this taken care of right away.

Given that the belt is critical to the engine's lifeblood, Bubba down at Jiffy Lube is not the guy. Look for an independent mechanic specializing in European makes, including Volvo.

Good planning: stay on top of that belt/tensioner and the engine will last a long time. Most of the failures we see at Brickboard are due to just that.

A reliable independent with Volvo experience (there are many) can do this job for you. It's a routine job. If you ask around you'll probably come up with a good, honest European specialist.
