I've never had one smoke like this 700 1987

I bought this car needing repair. The turbo is out, and it will pump a quart of oil into the exhaust system in about two minutes. Oil even drips out of the muffler. I had an oil puddle, under the muffler, about 1 foot by 3 feet in the street after I parked it from towing it home. It uses too much oil to be even driven around the block.

I have a nice used Mitsubishi turbo that I will replace the bad Garrett with in a few days. In a few weeks my daughter will be driving this car instead of the 242.

After you replace the turbo, it will smoke almost that bad for at least 5 miles.
I would venture to say your cat has used it last life already.

The exhaust system probably has at least a pint of oil left in it. After a hard run on the freeway, I'll check the exhaust emissions. It may need a catalytic converter.

Dear John, That is the kind of deal most of us wait and wait and wait for. That is a clean black beauty with nice alloys. I, like so many others, have backup engines, transmissions, drivelines, wheels, seats, etc. waiting for a nice body at the right price. Of course of all the Volvomaniacs out there, you and Steve are probably the most deserving. May the blessings be!

I'm on the other end of things. I have a beautiful 760 body waiting for a good motor. The previous owner put four holes in the block of the old motor.

Dear Uber, I went to car-parts.com and researched a 1995 230 Turbo w/ the least mileage I could find- 64K. Paid $900 delivered. Tore the engine apart and replaced everything- Hardly needed it- it was pretty clean. Reassembled with new parts and is ready. I enjoyed doing it. I would recommend it because for less than $1500. you can have an awfully good, nearly remanufactured long block with the trimmings. Mine has a newer turbo, remanned alternator/starter/AC compressor/ harness/ idle valve- you get the picture. Brickboarders helped me decide to go for it and I am glad I did. It was like a course in Volvo auto mechanics- well worth the tuition.

Check your compression to see if the rings are OK. Should be around 150 lbs. If it has an intercooler there's a drain plug at the bottom on the driver's side. If much oil comes out then the the turbo is your oil source.

The turbo is definately the oil source. Spark plugs will oil foul if that much oil is getting into the cylinders.

If you live in an area with alot of mosquitos, maybe you can add some methoxychlor (mosquito poison) to your oil and go into the mosquito control business, fogging neighborhoods. lol

$300. The tires are great, but it will need a headliner. There is no rust or corrosion.

I'm concerned about the engine having been run out of oil. If so, I'll experience a rod knock in the future. I have a good extra engine, though.

That is a beautiful car, John, but with regards to the oil consumption/blowby: "Holy cr*p, Batman!"

(How are the rings?)

The rings are fine. If the engine was run out of oil, the rod bearings may not be fine and I'll be putting an engine in the car.

Hi john,
I believe you got a nice deal.. Body and paint seems to be in good condition.. and I hope the reason for the smoke is failing turbo... No matter what your dauther will enjoy that car..
