After cleaning flame trap car is hard starting, loads-up rich & idles high ?? 200 1985

Hello All,
Yesterday I cleaned/re-gaped the plugs, fixed two minor vacuum leaks and the car ran Great (as it always has)!

Today I clean out the flame trap (which was not very dirty) and now I have a whole new set of problems.

It is now Very hard to start, loads up on fuel and the idle has jumped from 800/900 to 1,100/1,200 RPM range in "park" or "Drive" position according to in-dash tachometer.
Moving from drive to park idle will momentarily jump to 1,700 amd then come back down to the 1,200 RPM range.

Trying to start without pressing the accelerator requires cranking for about 10 seconds. Then it starts but idles very rough, slow and obviously running very rich.
It then clears up, smoothes out and runs fine after revving it up a couple of times to clear out the rich condition.
It then runs fine but is still idling much higher than before cleaning out the flame trap.

I though I may have inadvertently disconnected an electrical connector or hose during the process but can't find anythig wrong.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dale

Another Symptom to add 200 1985

Shielding on the coolant temp sensor wire has flaked off after touching it.

Wire is now completely bare but is registering the proper temperature on dash gage.

What is the sensor just slightly to the right and down from the temp sensor?

I have discovered that if I let it set for about 10 minutes it will start OK.
But if I turn in off and try restarting immediately I get a no-go with the same original results.

Found that if I let it set for about 10 minutes it will start OK.
If I then turn it off and immediately try to restart I get the same original hard start and overly rich symptoms.

I've checked and re-checked all hoses and wire connections.

Also... It has never ran rich before. Plugs are light colored and very clean.

Btw, what is the sensor just right and down a little from the temp sensor?

Certainly you've checked the hoses three, maybe four times now. The connector for the coolant temp sensor is where I'd suspect a problem with brittle 1985 wires. Right next to the flame arrestor.

        Dear Dale,

The sensor with the single yellow wire is the temperature gauge sender; the one in the block just behind it is the knock sensor. The engine coolant temperature sensor is hidden behind the flame trap under the third intake runner; it has a two-wire connector on it. If the wires open up or crack off on that sensor, the fuel will dump in like it was January in the Yukon.
