do my rotors need to be replaced? 200 1978

on a '78 245 with 220k:

doing the front brakes, i found some areas of the rotors to have rust spots, and one rotor appears to be slightly warped, with a wobble of less than 1mm. the other one is perfectly true.

when braking, there is felt a slight pulsing in which the braking power is briefly increased. is this an acceptable condition?

is there a recommended way of cleaning the rotors, or do they need to be replaced?

thank you in advance

IMHO any noticable warping is reason to replace. There is a specificaton on the min. thickness for rotors. Turning is not recommended and not really cost effective. FCP has a decent selection of new rotors for around 30 each.

ok. i read almost all volvos have girling calipers, but i am not so sure mine have not been replaced in the past. how can i identify them? the rotors are solid, not drilled or vented in any way. aren't girling calipers for vented rotors? what do you think i should order?

      thanks

The vented rotors have cavities between the braking surfaces - not drilled from side to side & slotted like the ones you see on Ebay. It's clear to see which is which when you look at the outside circumference of the rotor. It's a near-certainly you've got vented rotors. The solid rotors are just that - a solid disc, no vent spaces between the faces. Not used beyond the early 80s & converting your car to take them would also have involved switching calipers so it's highly unlikely anyone would have done that particular swap.

EDIT: Please disregard my above ramblings. I read the year as 87 at first glance, not 78. My apologies! The opposite is true, you almost certainly need the solid rotors. Yes, replace them - solid rotors do not turn well on a lathe & are quite prone to warpage again after turning.

the faq answered the girling question, they are in fact girling calipers. then is it ok to get solid rotors?

The brand of the caliper does not matter, you need to pull off a front wheel and look at the rotor. Is there an air gap between the front surface and the back surface, it will measure about a 1/4 inch wide? If there is an air gap you have vented rotors. Any brand of caliper you have could use a vented or non vented rotor.
