i just finished cleaning my flame trap for the first time. the trap itself was mostly clear, but the smaller hose fitting where the hose that runs to the intake manifold was completely blocked. i cleared it out and reinstalled. i'm curious what sort of problems this might have been causing???

    Make sure to check the fitting on the intake manifold where the other end of the samll hose hooks on. It has a very small opening. It is lots of fun to unclog too.
    I believe the purpose is to take the pressure/gases from the crankcase and burn them up and then out the tailpipe. I think the big hose is for idle and the small hose is for while it is driving down the road.

    When the flame trap gets clogged, manifold pressure gets too high and will try to find somewhere else to vent. Hopefully by pushing the dipstick up. Or by blowing past the rear main seal.

    Was the small hose itself clear? They can get very packed too.

    I am curious as to the function of that little breathing hose to the Intake is all about . I'll stay tuned

      the small hose was mostly clear...the small plastic nipple (where the small hose attaches) on the plastic assembly which holds the flame trap was completely blocked. it took about 30 minutes of wrangling with a paper clip, carb cleaner, and a small threaded finish nail to get it clear.

        Been there.

        I believe the Bent open paper clip is the weapon of choice lol

        I went with the drill bit approach. It's amazing how hard that crud gets.
