On the passenger side engine mount (ScanTech--9 months old): 1) there's only 1/8-inch clearance to a new OEM Volvo oil filter, and 2) surface of mount is bulging and 3) the mounting bolts are now offset by perhaps 3/4-inch (engine side lower than support bracket side). Does this look normal, or is it failing?
The gap between the cross-member and oil pan appears to be even--about 3/8 to 1/2 inch all across
If it is failing, any concerns with installing a diesel engine mount ONLY on the passenger side?

Thanks for the quick and extensive help. I have no plans to add a turbo, so I think I’ll bite the bullet for both Volvo OEM gas-engine motor mounts. The car will be away at college soon, and better off to be ScanTech-free.

I'm installing them in my 1983 244Turbo soon to be intercooled.
Really don't want to replace them for a while. Original Volvo part, I have the part no. for those who want it. 50 bucks a side. I also got a volvo trans mount for the m46 and have part no. as well.
Anyone have any good ideas to protect them from oil????????
Think I might try tyvek, but its been hard so far...

Not good. Mine have never failed in that way. Mine always separate the Metal and the rubber. Never had it buldge out like that.
Oil filter side Mount is noticably a larger mount then the Other side. Make sure that's what you have on your car.
9 Months? yikes. should be more like 100K between changes

I’m surprised to consider possible reversal of the mounts. A reputable indy shop did the install. My passenger mount *does* have the locator button visible on the edge of the bottom bracket.
The driver’s side mount is supposed to have the offset mounting bolts, and the rubber locator pin in the center? Is that right?
Comparing new OEM and ScanTech passenger-side mounts at the dealer (using the Charmin pinch-test), the Volvo mount felt slightly softer. This leads me to consider the diesel mount, instead of the Volvo OEM.

The bolts are offset on both sides. The offset between the locating pin and bolt is closer together on the Drivers side. BUT anything can be forced.
It's hard to tell because of the bulge but By the looks of your picture it looks like they put the correct size on the Pass. side. As I said, mine never bulged, they just eventually separated. I got mine at NAPA the first time and FCP Groton the second.
The original mounts lasted 160K.. NAPA's lasted 90+K I just changed them a month or so ago. So the Groton mounts have not been proven yet. They were not Scan tech though.

If it's MTC, prepare to change it even sooner ... and by some of the horror stories, it may be a lot sooner!

ScanTech parts - which have a solid reputation for problems - from a dealer sounds like a scam to me. Switch to a known reputable brand or preferrably Volvo oem (I sure hope this wasn't!) and you'll be fine. Don't bother with custom mods like diesel mounts, they will likely be way to stiff for the gas four. Also check that you or the dealer didn't mix up left and right, they differ on the 240.

Makes me a little nervous thinking that the dealer supplied a Scan-Tech part. Did the dealer have a choice of parts? Like here is what we can get today (from a local parts warehouse) versus waiting a couple of days to get an OEM from their warehouse. Not good if aftermarket and dealer part are the same, especially if it is an inferior part.

That mount looks pretty hammered.
I'm not sure if a diesel mount has the top bolt in the same position as a gasser.
When you replaced the mount did you do both and the tranny mount at the same time?

All three were done. Driver's side looks OK. Didn't check the trans mount. The replacement was done by an indy shop, so I didn't see what the previous failed mounts looked like. If needed, I'll do this replacement.
The ScanTech mounts were from the Volvo dealer. He offered a new mount under warranty. The FCP Groton diesel mount (URL below) appears the same, but is it too thick?

Well I lookd today, I don't have a gas burner mount loose, but I did have a diesel passenger side mount loose. It measures 48 mm thick and 77 mm diameter with the studs on both sides centered and the allignment nubs on opposite sides.
Does that help any?

I'm not sure about the thickness. I'll try to remember to check later today, I should have one of each loose to look at.
