Oil Filters 200 1989

Its time to for me to change my oil cause my dad is 500 miles away. So what oil and filter do yall brickheads use that I can get down at the parts store or Wal-Mart. I know my dad used Mann oil filters but I cant find them in the store and I cant order them.
Thanks,
Matt

Just returned a NAPA gold filter. It is 3/4-inch taller than the Bosch or Volvo filter, and hit my motor mount. Turns out my 9-month old ScanTech mount has failed. Check carefully for clearance under the filter.

If in doubt about the filter, and whether the local proprietary filter available has a drain back valve, go to the local Volvo agent and buy a genuine one. They're barely more expensive than a pattern.

    Brickdriver:

whatver you do, avoid succumbing to 'The Orange Wall of Death'...use Fram Filters only as a last resort...very cheap paper and poorly made...have been known to seize engines due to the relief valve clogging.

    Best of luck,
    -Dennis

    Everyone's favourite subject...

I use BIG oil filters, since I have the room in the engine compartment.

The Bosch 72174 is well made with a metal anti-drainback valve. I use 3569s as well. These are both like the large Ford PH8 filter; confirm you have the clearance to the passenger wheel well (I do).

Benefits: more filtering area and more capacity. Bigger is better IMHO.

Oil - cars don't care - owners do. See recent discussions on dog treats, women's handbags and speaker cable.

New oil is better than old oil. Brand discussions are silly. 15W40 or 20W50 for this time of year.

Don't know where you are, but most towns, even small ones, have a NAPA store nearby and their oil filters are very good quality. Not as good as the Mann's, but I use them as my second choice when I can not get the OEM stuff. I have also used the Motorcraft filters on the Volvo and my Toyota truck, they are very good quality.
Any oil, conventional or synthetic, that has the current API SM and ILSAC GF-4 ratings will do fine. Volvo recommends the 10w30 viscosity for most conditions, and 15w40 for severe hot weather.
I have used the Castrol products for years with great results. Last week it was $7.97 for a 5 qt jug of the Castrol GTX 10w30 at my local stinkin' Wallymart. Enough for the oil change, and plenty left for a top off.

are we up to 'SM' already? 200 1989

re: "...has the current API SM and...."

Are we up to an "SM" standard yet? The last time I bought a case of oil, it was only "SL"! Time flies, I guess.

      Regards,

Oil - Mobil 1 in the turbo, usually Chevron, Shell, or Mobil, as they're more apt to be on sale in the n/a cars.

As for oil filters ... I use Mann and Motorcraft. Here's my oil filter deconstruction thread.

If you can fit the giant FL-1A, go with that one. If not, the aforementioned FL-300 works, albeit with lesser filtering.

Note that it was deduced that the Fram filters offer a mere 111 sq.in. of filtering, not to mention cardboard construction.

Oil Filter needs to have an anti-drainback valve. The Fram ToughGuard has one, don't get the bottom level Fram. Best is to use the Mann 917.

Oil - chances are your owner's manual specifies 15W-40. I use 10W-30 in winter, 10W-40 or 20W-50 in the summer. Hot here in Texas. And, I don't know what climate you are in. Brand? change oil and filter every 3000 miles, and almost any oil will do OK. I use Havoline, by the case lot.

Remember that Wal-Mart uses low advertised prices on some things to get you into the store. Other things may not be lower than someplace else. Shop around.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

I use Castrol GTX and Mann (used AC Delco last oil change).

Many folks do not like FRAM ("orange can of death") but also many have had good results from them. Personally for a few dollars more, I'd go with a WIX et al (carried at NAPA) or you can order MANN online:

    www.fcpgroton.com

www.eeuroparts.com (free shipping on orders >$40USD)

It you want all of the oil information Modern Man can absorb, try www.bobistheoilguy.com and visit the forum section.

K & N oil filters are absolutely the best! I run them on my Volvos and VW, my friends Honda and Toyota, and every other car that gets an oil change from me. To get a K & N for the Volvos, I go to Napa Auto Parts. In comparision, Mann/Bosch/Fram/etc. blow. Good luck!
