flasher relay wiring? help 140-160

so when i got my 73'142 it had a 3 post relay in that was not the corect one. it would work for the turn signals but would just buz when the hazard switch was on. the terminals on this relay are 49, 49a, and 31

so i got the corect relay. it has a 49, 49a, 31, and c. the wires under the dash are a yellow, white, blue with red stripe and a black ground.

witch wires go to what terminals. i've tried several combos and nothing seeems to work right.

thanks

flasher relay wiring? help 140-160

I'm looking at the diagram in Haynes, but the print is so small and blurry that it is hard to make out, even with a magnifying glass. This much, I think, I can see; Green goes to 31 (Ground), white to 49, and red to C.
That leaves yellow to whatever is left over - can't read the number, but I suppose that would be 49a. I hope someone comes up with a more definite reply.

I can look for you in a few hours when I get home, but apparently electronic flasher relays do not use the black ground wire, which would probably be C on the new relay.

C: Blue Red, to dash indicator lamps
31: Black, ground
49: While, via emergency switch to fuse box
49a: Yellow, via indicator switch to indicator lamps

This is from my '73 164 factory workshop manual, which will be the same as for your car since it uses industry standard relays.

ok tried this way the turn signals and hazaeds work corectly but only in the front. also the indicator lights on the dash do not work. think i could have fried them tring the wiring other ways. they used to work. all my fuses are good. any idea of what to check? thanks

The front lights and rear lights are wired in parallel. If the front works but not the rear, then something is wrong in the wiring harness. And you will not blow any bulbs, they are rated 12V and no wiring configuration will give more than 12V. It could be that you've fried a wire somewhere by connecting 12V to ground.
