should i undo the tranny mount and lower before O/D replacement? 200 1986

i'm getting ready to do an O/D solenoid replacement....should i drop the tranny first before i get it apart or is it easy enough to do correctly without dropping it?

It's been a while since I did it... but I think it will be much easier for you if you remove the crossmember bolts and lower the trans *a little*. Too much and you'll be crunching the harness into the firewall up top.

The OD solenoid has 2 socket head bolts, 6mm I think, maybe it's 5. Keep everything as clean as possible. Haynes has a good recommendation: they suggest sliding a piece of cardboard up over the trans to keep crap in the tunnel from falling into your exposed solenoid holes. IT's a good idea- keep it as clean as possible.

    Good luck!

The OD solenoid is easy to get to on the automatic trans. Not sure about the manual trans.

The wire harness is routed to the passenger side of the trans and then over to the drivers side of the trans. Be sure that the wire is not melted to the trans. case like mine was.

it's an auto trans.....it is easy to get at, i just can't see over the top of it and didnt know if this was necessary when dealing with the o rings and stuff.

Use some grease on the O rings to hold them in place (in the solenoid).
I got some O rings that were slightly smaller than they should have been and I almost never got it back together. With the right O rings they'll stay in place with some light grease.

My OD wire was broken where it comes through the body under the trans shifter cover. The wire is coming from the relay but goes under the shift cover and through a grommet to the OD solenoid. The ground is the trans case.
Be sure to check for the 12volts at the solenoid connector when you get it disconnected. I like a 12 volt test light best. Just clamp it to the trans case and probe the wire while someone is turning the switch on and off.

        Good luck.
