Fuel Distributor Help Needed!!! 200 1985

i have been trying to get my 85 244 turbo running, and have tracked the problem down to one area. the fuel disributor is getting gas, but not passing it on to the injectors. i am almost sure that the car will run if i can remedy this problem. if i crank the motor and/or give it gas while trying to start it, pressure builds up and then if i crack any of the fuel line bolts, gas sprays out. i checked with the auto parts stores in town, and they priced the fuel distributor at $500-$3000! that is far more than the car is currently worth.

does anyone know if (1) the fuel distributor can be opened up and cleaned or reconditioned if needed, or (2) if the best route would be to get a used part from a yard, or (3) if the real problem lies elsewhere and is just causing this trouble at the fuel distributor?

i took the air-fuel unit out and removed the fuel distributor and physically blew air through with my mouth and it seems to have open passages. this isn't the technical way to do things, but it was all i could think of.

i really need some advice on this, so if anyone could respond, i would appreciate it. a phone call would be great so that i could explain things better. if you call, i'll call you back on my bill. 435-327-1911.

thanks!

Fuel Distributor Help Needed!!! 200 1985

Since the car sat for a long time (previous post), I would do a quick check to see if the airflow plate is free to move (engine off).

If it is free, run the pumps (jumper fuses 7 and 4 -- Left side contacts best).

Then see if you can depress the airflow plate with moderate pressure. It must deflect a little (as with cranking airflow) before the FD will meter fuel to the injectors.

If it feels like it's locked, it could be excessive Control Pressure on the control plunger, due to a blocked fuel return at the CPR/WUR.

But with any Kjet, a fuel pressure test as Chris suggests is probably the very best 1st step, so you know your basic Control and System pressures are correct at "square one".

The fuel distributor is generally pretty bombproof. The control pressure regulator may have failed but first I'd suspect the fuel pump - if there's not enough pressure from that pump to open the injectors nothing's going to happen.

guys, thanks for the help. after reading your messages and then re-reading the manual, i think the best step for me at this point would be to test the line pressure and see if the pump is sending enough to open things up. i know it pumps, but maybe not enough.

has anyone ever done a line pressure test? if so, is there a special gauge or do i fabricate one, or what's the best route?

      thanks

Yes, there is a special gauge set up for Kjet(sometimes called "CIS" in catalogs). It's a 100 psi gauge, hose connected the middle of a "tee", with a shut-off valve in one leg of the tee.

I won't go into the attachement here, since you don't have one yet. And I don't see it in the latest JC Whitney, but they had it a few months ago for about $60. I'd suggest you put up a new post for possible sources.

It measures both Line/System and Control pressure, according to whether the shut-off valve is closed or open. Both pressures are well worth knowing when diagnosing Kjet operation.

Did you check the airflow plate? If it doesn't move, you can have 90psi from the pump, but nothing from the injectors.
Also check out the short Kjet movie link that Art posted at the top. I think it shows that the airflow plate has to move before the injectors "sing".
