740 injection problems. compete flooding?? 700 1989

As soon as I start cranking the engine, all of the injectors open continuously and fill the engine with fuel. I drained about 2 gallons out of the sump yesterday. Obviosly the car wont start. With the fuel pump jumped and the key on there is good fuel pressure and the injecters are closed. As soon as I crank the injectors go continuously open. It is the same with the key on and jumping the starter solenoid. I have good spark so I feel it is not the crank position sensor. Do the injectors fire simultaneously or are they timed like the spark plugs? My wireing diagram makes it look like simultaneously.

Please help

James

For some reason your injectors are getting a constant ground signal. They are hot with the key on and the LH ECU controls the ground side. If that driver in the ECU is shorted to ground the injectors will simply stay on and barrel fuel through them as fast as the pump can push it. It is possible that the ECU is bad but the more likely culprit is the harness. It has been years since I have seen one do it but, in the harness under the intake manifold there is a splice where all of the injector grounds come together. I have seen a harness deteriorate to the point where that splice shorted to ground and kept the injectors on continuously. There are a couple of connectors under the brace that runs from the firewall to the passenger's strut tower, under that brace you need to find the 8 pole connector that has a gray wire in the #7 position, leaving the connector connected, pop open the back side of it and slide out wire. Turn the key on and if it continues to barrel fuel then your problem lies between the injectors and that wire connector (i.e. it's in the harness somewhere). If you turn the key on and it no longer runs the injectors well then it is being grounded somewhere between the connector and the ECU, most likely the ECU. Check it out and let us know.

Mark

I disconected the wire just as you said and the injectors did not open. I'll scrounge some junk yards for a new computer. Someone has already grounded the wire that comes from the fuel pump relay, bypassing the computer, and the car has been hit on the right side. Not the best way to treat a computer I am sure.

Thanks for the tip.

James, sure sounds like a control unit doesn't it? The only other thing you might want to do is to reconnect the grey wire at that connector and disconnect the ECU itself just to make sure that the wire is not grounding somewhere between that connector and the ECU. Afterall, it was hit on that side so you never know. The 89-90 LH ECU's were really garbage, I cannot tell you how many of those I saw replaced back in the day. 99% of them were for failure to engergize the fuel system relay and you say someone has already jumpered that portion of the relay. Make sure you disable that part before you connect in your new/used ECU.

Good Luck, Mark
