1990 Volvo 740 Odometer Problem 700 1990

I just bought a used 1990 Volvo 740 with 98K miles on it.
I took it out for a drive from NY to Philadelphia, and noticed that the odometer wasn't working. This continued for about 50 miles and then it magically started working again. I have no clue what happend. It worked throughout - and I thought that was the end of that problem. Turns out the same exact thing happened on the way back. About 50 miles passed before the odometer magically started working.

I just graduated college, and just got a job - not very high paying - and am not very big on expensive repairs. I did some googling to notice that the problem is probably with the gears that run the odometer. Is that the problem? Is it possible to personally change the gear in my Volvo? If not, how much am I looking at in damages, i.e., $$$.

Thanks for your help - this is bugging the heck out of me.

PK.

    Interesting things these odometers.
When I got my 1991 740 new, I soon found out that if the trip meter is not reset exactly to 000, then it will jam the main odometer.
Since I was then leasing the car and had a limit on Kms I could drive without penalty, I found a very easy way to let 28,000 Kms slip by unrecorded.

Well now my car is at 440,000 Kms and runs sweetly still.

PK, Check the Brickboard FAQ page- there are a couple of write ups on replacing and repairing broken odometers. If I may say so, I wonder about a 1990 with "puppy milage" like that (98K); not saying it ain't for real, but my 90 740's got about 195K- that seems to be about the average around the brickboard, give or take several thousand miles. If you think about it, your car definitely has more than 98K on it if the odometer registers after every 50 miles, etc- in which case, you may want to give the car an overall
high-milage lookover, since it's getting near to the point where your love of volvos (and your checkbook) may be put to the test.

I agree. When I decided to purchase the car I too was surprised by the low mileage. But the carfax report gave me no problems - hence I did not worry too much about it. I figured that the odometer would be the last of my problems.

I was hoping you could direct me to some links for repairing the odometer. I need to get a car inspection done anyway, so now you're stressing me out again about the actual condition of the car. It runs well, seemingly.

      Thanks

If I were you, I wouldn't stress too much about the condition of the car. Even double the odometer reading is still in the "barely broken in" range for a Volvo. My 1991 745 Turbo has almost 200,000 miles on it and it is still as solid and quiet as virtually any new car from any other car maker. And when washed and waxed it is still quite a head-turner.

Any car will give you problems, they're machines. You'd never believe the things I've seen go wrong with brand new cars over the years. A Volvo with the kind of mileage yours probably has will still give you less headaches than most cars with half the mileage, and will usually keep running even with problems that would cripple most other cars.

To find the links for fixing the speedo yourself, look for the drop down menus on the right side of the homepage here at the Brickboard, or at the top of the forum pages, and drop the "features" menu down, scroll down to 700/900 FAQ and click on that. When that page loads, I think you click on "electrical:instruments" to get to the speedo repair info.

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. I felt a lot better after reading that. But still - for tune-up purposes, checking the mileage/gallon the car gives me, and when I'm driving by Mapquest directions, I would like a working odometer. IPD has an odometer repair kit - but it appears to be geared for the 850. Will it still work for the 700 series?

Can a local mechanic fix the problem without ruining it permanently?

I have dealt with this problem and can give you some insight. The first thing you need to do is take out your instrument cluster. This can be done in 5 minutes.
Only 2 screws holding it in place behind the covers on either side of the lower corners of the cluster. If you have a digital camera I would advise taking a few photos of the back of the cluster before unplugging the various wires. This may prove useful in re-assembly and will also enable you to print a photo should you need to compare it to possible replacement units.

On the back of the cluster you will notice a circuit board that was manufactured either by VDO but more likely Yazaki. The name should be on the circuit board.

If it is a VDO you may be able to buy the little gear and fix the problem easily. Your instument cluster will have the date of manufacture in black on the white plastic for reference.

All of the 89+ 740's I have seen have Yazaki speedos and the gear fix does NOT apply. In this case you can try tinkering with the contacts (mine was fixed this by this inexact method)and has been working since. Unfortunately Yazaki made several different speedos and the electrical connectors are different. Your cars speedo harness will not directly plug into different models. I believe all of the other gauges are the same based on scrutinizing several different ones.

Your other option is pay $100 and send the speedo in for overhaul or find a whole replacement cluster and hope it doesn't have the same problem. You may appreciate having extra gauges, light bulbs, etc. as Volvo gauges are known to fail.

All of this assumes your sending unit is functioning. If you can find a mechanic who either knows anything about the Yazaki speedos except how to replace them I would be amazed.

            Good Luck,

            Maui
