K-Jet without catalytic or O2? 200 1984

I've been running many, many miles on my 245 turbo without a catalytic converter or oxygen sensor. Aside from being a bad person, am I causing problems or missing out on anything great by running this way? All opinions with or without facts welcome.
Thanks,
Al A., 245GLT

You should put an oxygen sensor in there, it will run smoother and make better power. The system is designed to take the reading from the oxygen sensor in the exhaust to deternime the correct amount of fuel for the best drivability and power.

The cat on the other hand isn't as important, I have covered a lot of miles as well with a gutted one. I have also passed emissions with the same gutted cat.

I'll say this... '75-'76 49-state 240's were delivered with K-Jet, no oxygen sensor, and no cat.

Infer what you will from that.

The early 240's w/K-jet and EGR didn't have an O2 sensor, but the also had a fuel distributor that did not have a frequency valve. The frequency valve, coupled with the O2 sensor feedback and corresponding ECU, regulates fuel delivery throughout the throttle range. When you disconnect the O2 sensor from these systems they run open loop, i.e. no signal to the ECU to respond for changing air/fuel mixture. In this case the ECU will lean the mixture out as much as it can. If the O2 sensor wire is grounded, not just disconnected, it gives the ECU a signal which drives the mixture to very rich, similar to a signal while the car is warming up on cold starts.
Either way, the engine management is defeated without the O2 sensor working. It is not for emissions control. The early systems that your car has, the Lambda Sound, are actually very good for air/fuel management control, and you'll find the engine has better performance and idling with it working.

Thanks, this is definitely food for thought. I erroneously believed that the oxygen sensor was primarily for emissions control - didn't consider its role in metering F/A.
