Bungee cord did the trick (pics) 1800 1967

I kind of like this little car. Did about 450 miles yesterday with no speedometer and no tach and a bungee cord around the shifter to keep it from jumping out of 4th. On the plus side, I did have a water temp gauge, oil pressure gauge and the OD was working. Wife said we ran about 75-80 most of the trip.

About 30 miles out of Phoenix, the car starts running like crap and cutting out intermittently. It doesn't completely quit so I drove it a way like that. Every time it started running poorly, the tach (which had been living at zero) started jumping around so I figured it was something electrical. Finally pulled off the road and cut the white wire off the coil. Problem solved and the car ran great the rest of the way home.

Here's some pics. I put rags in my kid's and my nephew's hands to knock the dust off the car before the trip. Wife trailed me in the 740T.

Got this cute little camera that takes lo-res movies so I uploaded this little 30-second clip. Hope this works.

On the road

Great pics and I'm glad the trip went well. It was very nice meeting you, too.
Every time I see the 1800 it just amazes me what a great looking car it is. Wish Volvo would follow Ford's Mustang footsteps.

Nice to meet you too. Hope those 164 parts go to a good cause. The wine you left was excellent as well. Thanks!

PS, how do you get that little circle above the 'a' in your name?

Yup, that's right, George. It's virtually programmed into my fingertips by now.
By the way Bob I traded those 164 parts for an unused 73-74 steering wheel. Probably the only way to find one without cracks.

No, I've done that before but it seems faster to go go 17 through Flag, 89 N to Tuba City and 160 home.

Great car!! I also have a 1967 that has been stored for 25yrs. in my father-in-law's garage. I looked at it Easter morning covered by a layer of dust.

Do you really own 21 Volvos??? My wife thought I was sick with 13(six 122s, two 1800S, two 1800E, two 740 Turbo Wagons and two 960s)!!! If the truth be told 5 are actually parts cars.

      You need some 240's :-)

Yes, really 21. About half run and drive. Some better than others. 13 is pretty good though. Don't be unlucky, get another. I think at some time in the future, all the RWD Volvos will be owned by people that have more than one of them.

Looks great Bob! You take that dog on all the Volvo acquisition runs?

I sorta know how you are... you mind my asking what the cost of this one was?

I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of car you're in when you come to build a windmill :-)

    Cheers!

Uhhhh, free I guess. It was my father's car when he passed away 12 years ago. He never drove it much, just bought it before he passed. Anyway, My bro-in-law got it and drove it around for the last 10 years or so. He wanted to keep it in the family, got tired of working on it, has 3 kids, so it went to me.

There's actually large rusty holes in the frame rails at the inside edge of the fenders. Completely invisible unless you crawl under the car. The floorpans and trunk are OK but there's qite a bit of Bondo on the car, some from 20 years ago and some from when my bro-in-law got run into. The bodyshop bastages clearcoated the whole front clip and now it's all peeling. I HATE CLEARCOAT!

All the rubber is shot. I filled three 1/4" to 1" gaps in the windshield gasket with black RTV to keep the water out. There's a couple of gaps in the back window gasket too that are now silicone.

The pictures are very decieving, the car is not that good. Dash is cracked, seats are okay, the carpet is rotted clear down to the plywood behind the back seat. Wiring is a mess and only one gauge out of seven works.

      So don't be too jealous!

Cute kids. Nice car. My guess is that you could lose the bungee cord if you simply took the shifter boot off and reached down and tightened the retaining nut at the base of the gear shift lever. A pair of water pump pliers is good for this task. If it is loose, might be a good idea to take the shaft out and clean and grease it before replacing and tightening the retainer.

Hmmm, I know exactly what you mean in a 122 but the "boot" in this car is not rubber and I can't figure out how to remove it. I've never fooled with one of these M41s with the linkage yet. All the ones I've seen have the pudding stirrer shifter (122, 544 etc).
