86 240 sedan HIGH IDLE and HARD RESTART 200

Looking for suggestions

Just today I was driving my wifes 240. We stopped for lunch and when put her in park I noticed a very high idle about 2200 RPM. I went in and had lunch only to return to a NO START condition. I could tell it was flooding with fuel due to the smell. But I pulled the distributor cap off and turned it over I had good fire in cap.

I though it must be a throttle position sensor or some type of air flow issue.

I depressed acceleror to the floor about 10 times, tapped on the Throttle valve switch with a wrench. And she started. Still with a high idle though. I get home pull in and get ready to park and High idle goes away.

My thoughts are that it maybe the coolant temp sensor, or the throttle valve switch. This is my first Volvo so I have not got the Volvo experence but I have had many BMWs in the past and the fuel and ign systems are very similar. But is there something I else I need to check.

Does anyone have any other suggestions.

Thanks

I had a similar problem some time back on an 85-245.
Ran RICH , idled FAST and used fuel. Fuel Pressure
Regulator was at fault. Probably still a $5 PNP item
for your spare parts box!

The fuel presure regulator, I'll check that. Since my post though i work in it a bit and move the harness near the coolant sensor and it started to high idle moved in again and it quit. so I think it is in the connector or the harness. But i think I'll replace that Fuel press. reg since it is cheap just in case.

Thanks for the advise.

Hi Star,

I also have an 86 240 that I had a hard time getting past the emissions test here in WI. On the 3rd try we passed.
I'm thinking you may have an intermittent mass air meter failure. If you disconnect it, and see if you get a start if you run into that no start situation that could prove to be the problem. By disconnecting the MA meter you'll cause the engine/computer to go to a default/bypass which will get you started bbut will give bad emissions results if you were to have to go through a test for emissions.

You might also consider using a dwell meter to set the dwell on that year to set the idle. I had to do that too when I was getting my 86 to pass the test.

Sincerely Bill Nelson Hartford, WI

PS I just found/joined the Brick Board yesterday and already I got 2 great responses to a headlight problem I'm having. On my 1990 240 they will not go out on a turn key and light switch turn off. See my entry. Bill N.
