Suspension guru's.........Tire wear 900

Subject vehicle : 1998 S90, 73,700 miles.

Both front tires have both (inside and outside) edges feathered. Swapped fronts for rears and criss-crossed, now the rear tires (now on front) are showing the same signs. This happened with the previous tires as well and I am getting a "drump, drump," sound whilst rolling at low speeds. Tires were recently re-balanced before the rotation to eliminate balance issues.

I am 100% certain it's the suspension. I rotate tires every 5,000 miles. The car handles well and feels fine at speed although not as smooth as it could be. No noticeable play or rhythmic vibrations.

Air pressure in tires is 32 psi and there is no play that I can find by shaking the lifted tires 3-9 or 12-6.

Thinking it might be lower control arm bushings but thought I would ask the Volvo 900 front suspension brain trust.

Your opinions are appreciated.

Thanks, DEWFPO

    Suspension guru's.........Tire wear 900

    Hi

I have a 95 960 with 114000km on it. I have a similar problem with inner tyre wear on new tyres (6000km) and wonder if it is the suspension or springs. The car has done relatively low kms but has been idle for some time, and not doing much travel. I am the second owner and still coming to grips with issues related to the car as I have only had it a short period of time. I drive about 200km per day to work and back and it is a great car for distance travel but it does challenge you in the area of diagnostics. I have come to the 960 by way of many 240's.

The engine mounts are fine, at least the wires around them are not taut, I have had the car wheel aligned, the tyres are new, the tie rod (LHS) (I drive on the RHS of the road so this roadside wears first-- Australian from north of Brisbane in Queensland)has been replaced.

I have been looking at spring replacement for the aditional reason that the car rides quite low, but all I can get from Volvo at present is springs are available with rating 1,2 and 3 and they don't yet know what the numbers mean, they would also have to come from Sweden! I would be grateful if anyone could direct me to a site with more information on the front suspension for these cars. (I have looked at the FAQ re suspension on this site but it is not specifically on this problem) I am also looking at shock absorbers and am pricing them at present.

I didn't replace the bushings in my car until 115K miles and they were getting quite loose. However, the tires still were wearing OK.

My guess is alignment. If the front has completely "neutral" toe-in the play in wheeel bearings and other parts may allow the wheels to oscilate a little at some speeds. The toe-in should have a little positive value for best results. Have a good 4 wheel alignment done. The problem is, once the tires have started to feather it is very difficult to prevent them from getting worse. Also, at that mileage, your front rubber bushings are nearing the end of their life and they should be replaced before the alignment in order to get a lasting fix.

    My thoughts on the mater......
