Puddle stalled my car again!!! 900

Well,

It's spring time and showers are back...I live in charleston and the streets over here are always flooded..So I drove through a fairly size puddle and the car stalled once again. I noitced that the last time this happened I was also turning right. I can't figure this out. The car started after about 2 minutes...Had to warm it up for another two minutes iuntil finally the idle held and got the car going. Help....I even wrapped the ditributor cap with plastic and I'm thiking that something is getting wet with the electrical system under the car...maybe the ignition coil??

Hi,

Fit Bougicord wires and you will most likely solve your problem. They are a snug fit. This is particularly important for the coil/high tension wire at the base of the distributor.

Take care,

Make sure your car still has the "Belly Pan"...the plastic piece that fits under the engine to keep water and other stuff from spashing up into your engine bay.

The pan is still in place..so I'm not sure which electrical unit is getting wet which could cause it to stall. Anyone....I think I'm going to pull the ignition coil wire which is located under the distributor and is exposed to water splashes and just cover it up with lots of silicone grease..

I think you are on the right trail. I've used silicone grease to waterproof several ignition systems. Other places it can help are:

1. In spark plug boots
2. Under the edge of the distributor cap
3. Under the rubber boots on the distributor cap and coil.
4. Seal all reachable electrical connectors except the O2 sensor connector.

I found the best buy in silicone grease was the large size SylGlide tube at most auto stores.

Sorry I don't have a digital camera yet. I mis-spelled the name. It is named SIL-GLYDE and I recommend the 4 oz tube. It is useful as an anti-squeal lube on the back of the brake pads as well as a good electrical insulator against water.

I joke that I use it on everything but my morning toast. Try the right spelling on the Auto-Zone clerk. I haven't looked into the local AZ for this stuff since I get mine at Knecht's which may not have a store where you are.

the grease you are talking about is commonly known as Di-electric(al) grease... specifically meaning it is a non-conductive grease used in preventing rust and ensuring the smooth release and mating of electrical contacts / couplers. Silicone is the only way to go here, and make sure you choose a grease that is heat-resistant. Spark plug boot grease will usually work well, but as mentioned in previous posts, sil-glide is among the best if you can find it.

On another note, your alternator (being mounted low in the engine bay) may also be getting soaked going through those puddles, this would "bog down" your engine for a second, causing enough of a load to even stall your engine if it misfires or otherwise is slightly weak.

Good Luck!!
