rear main seal 200

Howdy,

We've got a 1989 240 wagon and it appears the rear main seal is leaking(lots).

How much can I expect to pay to get it replaced? Any idea how many hours it should take? I'm near Sacramento CA. Any suggested repair shops?

Thanks,

MG

    somewhere near $400 200

I just had this job done on my '89 240 for $400 total. While they were doing the job, they had to fix the shifter linkage on the old automatic tranny...if they didn't have to do that, it would have been $375. I provided the parts to the local garage...they did a great job. I bought the rear seal and the housing gasket from voluparts.com in Atlanta for like $20 - $30 I think.

I live in Davis. I'd recommend taking it to Redfield Machines, at least for an estimate. I usually take my Volvo there and the guy (Bob) is really helpful.

Other than crankcase pressure, there is a good chance that it is the valve cover gasket or the seal (round or half-moon depending upon year) at the back of the head. Both are easy and cheap to replace.

It'll cost a lot because removal of the transmission is necessary to access it. If your clutch is acting up in any way, now would be the time to fix it. Before you do anything, however, make absolutely sure your positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system is working properly. If it's not, oil can be forced past various seals. Get several bids from reputable shops if you decide to go for the rear main seal job.

"...it appears the rear main seal is leaking(lots)."

How do you know it's the rear main seal? Has it been accurately diagnosed?

Thanks everyone for all the help, Doug C. 81 242 Brick Off Blocks, turbo bars and wheels, M46; 86 244, B230, 150k , auto.

Yes, be sure that the PCV system is working correctly... 200

I had a clog in the small hose that runs from the flame trap to the intake manifold. Before I found it, I was convinced that I was going to have to go after my rear main seal. After replacing the hose, the leak eventually dried up.

Morale of the story, before going after the rear main seal be sure the flame trap and breather box (oil separator) are clear. Also clean or replace all related hoses. You might save yourself a ton of money!!
