'81 and newer 240 Accessory Gauge Bezel and rubber feet part numbers (basic gauge info included). 200

For those of you who have an '81 and newer 240 and would like to make use of the two gague sockets to the immediate right of the instrument cluster, here are some part numbers that should be of help. The prices were quoted to me from my local Volvo dealership in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Volvo part 1259730, Single Gauge Bezel for 240 dash ($7.50)
Volvo part 1259737, Rubber mounting foot to hold gauge, 3 required for one gauge($1.14)

A lot of us have seen the 240 turbo vehicles in the salvage yards, equipped with the 3-gauge pods and a handfull of various accessory gauges (usually Volt meter, Oil Pressure, Small Clock, and Vacuum/Boost). However, if you have a later 240, you probably have a radio mounted in the upper console position and would rather not have to relocate it to the lower (awkward) console position by the shifter.

The two unused single gauge sockets next to the instrument cluster provide an ideal mounting position for a pair of gauges. -assuming you have the appropriate 3 rubber feet and the single bezel to mount them (part numbers listed above). You can order these parts through your local Volvo dealership, or from FCP Groton. They do turn up on eBay from time to time, but it does seem that there are a lot more gauges than bezels available on eBay.

Additional gauge info (not comprehensive, just some helpful info on the more common gauges):

Voltmeter. For those wishing to mount a Voltmeter, connect the positive wire to a fuse that's hot when the ignition is turned on, and the ground can go to any chassis ground nearby or the negative battery terminal.

Oil Pressure Gauge. You'll need both the oil pressure sensor from the engine (on the donor car) as well as the gauge. There are two terminals on the sensor, one is for the red warning light in the instrument cluster, and the other (green wire) goes to the gauge input. You will have to run/install a new wire in the new car that's receiving the gauge since they didn't come equipped with an extra wire (green) for the gauge. On '85 and newer 240s, the mounting threads are different and you will need an adapter to convert 14 X 1.5mm to 1/8" NPT theads. Your local AutoZone or PepBoys should have a kit with 5 common thread adapters and will include the one you need. Just ask for SunPro kit number CP7573 and you'll be set ($4.99 plus tax). The stock Volvo Oil Pressure Gauges come in 3-bar and 5-bar versions, and they each have a different pressure sensor (look very similar, but have different part numbers so don't mix them up if you have both).

Small Clock. Assuming you have a Large Tach installed in your instrument cluster, the small clock should come with a small wiring harness that plugs into the back of the Large Tach and nothing else is required.

Fuel Economy Gauge and/or Turbo Boost Gauge. Either one of these gauges will require a vacuum line to be run from the intake manifold to the gauge. Using an 11mm wrench (or deep socket), remove a vacuum nipple from the donor car between cylinders #2 and #3 where the vacuum lines enter the manifold. Remove an unused plug from the same position on your car, and install the nipple. Run a section of vacuum line from the nipple through a gromet in the firewall (several to choose from) and up to the gauge. The Fuel Economy Gauge is ideal for a non-turbo car, but they can be hard to find (has a picture of a gas pump in the lower right of the gauge). The Boost gauges are much more common in the salvage yards and on eBay, and will help give a rough idea of your manifold vacuum and how much fuel you're consuming.

All of the gauges have a removeable light in them, and usually have a brown and black wires to power them. The black wire goes to ground, and the brown wire goes to the output of your rheostat for the interior lighting dimmer (to the immediate left of the instrument cluster, just above the headlight switch).

This post is by no means complete or comprehensive, just some information to help get you started if you're considering adding a few gauges in the two single pods. Feel free to save this post for later use by clicking the "SAVE" button in the upper right corner of this post window. Questions, comments, and additional information is always welcome.

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.
