Keeping you guys up to date on my life 200 1990

1990 244DL

I want to apologize to everyone for ranting on and on about how pissed off I am at Volvos. It's just that this car seems to break down on long trips and I end up having to leave it at a parking lot somewhere while I get picked up by a friend (who drove nearly 2 hours one way to pick me up). I intend today to order the driveshaft bearing and support from eEuroparts. I'll have to have it overnighted and then take tomorrow off from work and use one of my vacation days. I may drive to the car today and remove the entire driveshaft, return back to the house (a four hour drive alone roundtrip not to mention the removal of the shaft time) and hopefully have a machine shop press on the bearing tomorrow and then drive back down there to install the driveshaft. The only reason I'm hesitant to do this is because the bearing seems to have slid down the shaft during the process of failing. I don't want the shop to press the bearing on and put it in the wrong place. I am praying the car is safe in the mall parking lot. And now, to make matters worse, a snowstorm is coming to the northeast. Great fun. Working in the cold and sleet/snow.

Seating the Bearing 200 1990

I never did one but there was a good question raised. How do you know how far down to press the bearing?

Where is the car? South NY?
I've never done one before that's the reason for my question. I'm on Long Island

hi there, i have done three or four bearing changes. i use a small hammer and chisel to remove bearing, and last time i used a three jaw puller. and a pipe to reinstall new bearing. make sure the pipe only rides on the inner race of the bearing. there is a metal protective part that makes the hammer and chisel a little difficult. make sure you read the FAQ on how the shaft halfes line up, and mark the different parts before you remove the two shafts. (dont ask how i know) you will need to jack and such. good luck

The best piece of advice (one that I'd wished I'd have followed) is to buy both sizes of bearing & rubber mount, even if you think you know which one yours is. You can't tell from your year or even VIN#. I tried to eyeball it and of course I was wrong. Get both sizes and return the one you didn't use. Especially in your situation you don't want to be two hours from home and find out you've got the wrong size. Cover all your bases.

Just a thought. Are there any parts yards near you where you can buy a used driveshaft (complete)? It may save you a round trip.

If you have any service manuals, both Bentley and Haynes cover this bearing replacement as a DIY procedure -- without a press. I've done it both ways.

If you're up for it, the DIY method might save a little time and money. But I would not suggest it if you don't have a manual. And I would discourage going back and forth here for instructions, in a pressured situation.
