Exhaust leak at downpipe on 90 240

Exhaust leaking at downpipe area. Does anyone know, is there a way to remove the heat shield without disassembling the entire exhaust system?

You just break the heat shields off with a pry bar. The welds to the pipe break, leaving them loose on the pipe. They're not smart enough to fall off by themselves, however, so you have to break the welds along the side and open them up.

This won't fix the exhaust leak however- just stops the rattling. New exhaust gaskets are pretty cheap though. Just did this job on an 88 245, including the 4 along the head. I think the gaskets are $2 each. I also bought all new copper nuts, M8 for the head and M10 for the 3 on the flange-to-manifold.

    Good luck!

Exactly WHERE is your leak? at the exhaust manifold? at the "donut" gasket joint? or down the header pipe, where the necks merge from two into one?

I had a similar problem two years ago. When I removed broke off the heat shield, I found a small crack in the pipe itself, right at the joint. JBWeld and various exhaust putty mixtures would not hold. The permanent repair was to get a new header pipe. Things ran much better (and quieter!!!) after replacement

The leak seems to be down the header pipe above where they merge into one and below the donut gasket. Thanks for the info we were considering the fixes you described but it sounds like replacing the pipe will be required.
