Watch out for drive-thru lube places

Hi all. I thought I would try full synthetic oil in my 92 940T so I bought some Mobil 1 and a Fram filter. I've changed many filters in my day but have been going to Quik Lubes lately. Thought it should take 20-30 minutes to do it myself. Instead it took 2 - 3 hours and 3 different filter wrenches. I tried the end cap one and the metal strap one but I couldn't get either onto the filter, there was just not enough room between it and the intercooler lines to get them over the end. I could get a pretty good grip with my hand but couldn't budge it. I even tried the screw driver through the filter trick which made it mandatory that I get it off. I finally got it off using a nylon strap wrench with a 1/2" socket handle. The filter was on so tight that it took every ounce of strength I had to get it off and it was completely crushed. The new Fram filter went on really easy - because it was the right one. Not only had the young kid at the Quik Lube 6 months ago put the filter on with an impact wrench (or a 3' bar), but he had put the wrong Pennzoil filter on. The reason I didn't have room for the wrench is that he put on a PZ-34 instead of a PZ-104. I knew it wasn't right when I saw that it was 3/4" or 1" longer than the Fram, and that was enough. I don't know what engine it is for but I'm really lucky that it hasn't seemed to have harmed mine. Just a note of caution that whenever getting work done have the shop write down the filter number that they put in on your bill so you can check it yourself.

    from an ex-employee...

At one time, I was young and broke. I took a job at one of those quickie-lube places run by a major oil maker.

I won't say the name, but it rhymes with "Balvoline" :)

To get my next promotion (read: $0.15/hr raise, no change in job) I had to pass a "test". This test was comprised of having my manager look over my shoulder while I serviced a car, whith a checklist in his hand.

So anyhow, this made me a little nervous. When the service was complete, I had the customer start her car. I was to look over her shoulder for the "oil" light to go out. It didn't.

So I had her stop the engine, and went to double-check my work.

I NEVER PUT ANY OIL IN HER CAR!!

Well, I filled the crankcase, and all was just fine. I finished up and sent her on her way.

I told the manager, "Well, I guess that means I failed my test."

His reply? "No you didn't. You only got ONE THING WRONG. Everything else was perfect."

PERFECT??? Since when is running a car without oil PERFECT??

    Another Gyppy-Lube Oil Filter Tale

The qualifications for Filter Installer must be 19" collar and 5 1/2" hat size.

I was lucky to get one off my daughter's car only after eliminating the outer shell and guts (in stages) till I could barely access the square steel plate near the base with an air-hammer.

I saved the remnants for my garage "Hall of Shame", along with pads worn down to metal, thrown rod, etc.

Watch out for drive-thru lube places

Another issue with quickie lube places is they put on the absolute cheapest POS filter they can buy. At least Pennzoil has a name, even if the filter is a POS ... the one I removed from my '90 was a DynaLube filter - made in China.

Just for your reading ... I just did an oil filter deconstruction of a Mann and a Motorcraft filter, and Art did a deconstruction of the Fram filter ... and well, I hope you learn better and don't buy Fram next time.

Watch out for drive-thru lube places

Last weekend I braved my unheated one-car garage and changed the oil myself with my choice of filter (Mann) and oil (Castrol GTX). I soaked dirty oil on a few spots of my old jacket, but it was worth it knowing that it was done right* and nothing was damaged.*

    * hopefully!

And if something wasn't done right, I can ask you guys about it, learn from it, and do it right the next time. Just call me Zippy!

"...the young kid at the Quik Lube 6 months ago put the filter on with an impact wrench..."

Don't be maligning Zippy just because he has a room temp IQ. After all, he finally figured out how to use that impact wrench on filters, drain plugs, and lug nuts.

BTW........ A prevailing opinion on the BB at one time was that FRAM is the "orange kiss of death." You probably won't find a cheaper, flimsier, lighter weight POS filter made.

One downside to a longer, heavier filter is that it can vibrate at certain engine speeds (frequencies) sorta like a tuning fork. This can cause fatigue failure of the filter housing -- so using the correct size filter is important.

Walrus and others agree.......drive-thru lube places are hazardous to your brick

for other reasons beyond wrong filter, stripped drain plug threads, and other time bombs.

Scuttlebutt around here is that what's in that 55-gallon drum is just re-cycled oil. How do you know what you got?

Set up your place for easy oil changes. The price is right, the craftsmanship will be good, and your additional inspection of the car will pay dividends.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

This forum has had about one such report every other week, all kinds of horror
stories from a gasket and a half, loose drain plugs, filter too tight,
filter not tight enough, no oil in the engine, etc etc ad nauseam.

Same old deal, ya wanna job done right?........

    Absolutely...
Don't feel bad about pestering them to MAKE SURE they don't tighten the darn oil filter on too tight either! I brought my '99 Ford ZX2 back to Jiffy Lube last week with my old receipt showing them that they had performed an oil change 3,000 miles ago. The man asked "Is there a problem?" I said "Yeah, your oil changer practically soldered the darn filter on. Take it off because I'm not wasting any more of my time." I got a free oil change because of that....I stick up for my babies..haha

That story is not really that bad , good freinfd of mine son works in Charlotte NC went to a jiffy lube there for oil change came out and gave him the keys, he got about half mile down the road and the car bucked and stopped on him, got out and checked the oil. They never drained the old oil ,just added 5 more quarts. Blown head gasket and the car is still running 3 years later, after the fix, those old 240's are awesome. Oh yea when the towed the car home and had the head off , I saw it at my buddies shop, head was off,, 170k on the engine, ran my finger nail down the cylinder wall and no feel of a ring groove at the top of any cylinder, thats damn strong.

The reason this is impressive, IMO, is consider the amount of times the rings have gone over the surface of that engine of 170K miles! I can only guess that the iron they use in the castings is of very superior quality.

Also impressive is the fact you can't even feel a groove. A step of .0005" (12.7µm) can be felt on a surface with a finger nail.
