Extremely Bouncy Front Wheel / Vibration 700 1988

Hello,

I have a 1988 760 turbo wagon with 209K miles that has just developed an extreme vibration in the front end when going above 40 MPH or so. It seems to be coming from the passenger side front wheel area. I should note that my front strut cartridges are in need of replacement, but I haven't experienced the extreme nature of this vibration until last night. It feels like the wheel is out of balance (really out of balance - bouncing up and down). The tires have recently been balanced and the car does not pull when driving or when the brakes are applied. The ball joints, outer tie rod ends, and strut rod bushings had been replaced by the previous owner about a year ago (10,000 miles). Lug nuts are tight. Any ideas where I should start? I'm thinking possibly the front wheel bearings or the strut finally completely giving out. What would cause this in just one wheel? Is there a clear way to diagnose a bad wheel bearing? I'd hate to replace the hub/bearing assembly due to the high cost. The Haynes manual has a section adjusting the wheel bearings by replacing the hub nut and properly torquing it.

Thanks a million!

Pat

One additional check. Do you live in a cold climate? I had a new vibration last week. I thought I had lost a balance weight. I've concluded now though that it must have been a piece of ice stuck on the rim, because the problem disappeared after a day or so. I would have thought that the centrifugal force of highway speeds would shed anything stuck to a wheel almost immediately, but apparently not.

If you are in a cold climate, try one of those car washes where you do it yourself with the high pressure jet; if you focus on the wheels, inside and out, it should melt anything off.

      David,

Yep, I live in chilly Michigan. We've had a lot of snow lately and I did park along the curb after the plows came through and forced a buch of hard snow into the wheel spokes. I will certainly take a look. Thanks for your advice!

Since we got our 14" snowfall last week, we've had shaky wheels on all of our cars. Between plows, and everyday parking in snowbanks, it's easy to pack a tire with snow and ice.

The test for struts would be to push hard on each front corner of the car- if it bounces easily, they're weak or blown out. If the car is pretty resistant to movement, and stops bouncing immediately, the struts are probably fine.

Also, I just experienced a tread-separation bubble in one of my Gislaved 14" snow tires- made a heck of a low-speed steering wheel wobble and a vibration up to about 40 mph. Beyond that, the thing smoothed out. Noticeable lumpiness in tire when spun by hand on the car.

        Good luck!

If it is bouncy on a smooth road, the tire may have a slipped belt. Jack up that side and spin the tire by hand to check for a bulge. Using a piece of wood as a crude dial indicator will show a slipped belt.

I've seen this on Michelin Arctic Alpins, and years ago on 2 Pirellis—one about 500 miles after the other.

Your right front strut has died. If I were you I would replace both front struts at the same time. If the bearing would be going bad you would hear it make a lot of noise, especially in slow turns.

Thanks for your help. It's what I suspected, but I guess I was wondering if the symptom I described (a lot of bouncing above 40 MPH or so) clearly points to a dead strut? Also, when replacing strut cartridges, what else should definitely be replaced? Bumpstop, bellows, strut mount and/or bearings, control rod bushings, etc.

      Thanks again!
