Cold start problem, any ideals???? 200

My daughters 93 240 wouldn't start this morning. Would turn over, though slowly, put jumper cables on it it. The it would turn over hit once or twice and continue turnig over. Same thing over and over. Sound like it wanted to start then just crank.
Very cold here this morning, about 15 below F.
Ran fine yesterday, wasn't quite as cold but near 0.

Just cleared up a similar problem with the advice of John Sargent. Replaced the Coolant Temperature Sensor. Mine would start after I cranked it a hundred times while it was firing, then smooth out after a warm up. Now it runs like new... well, sort of...

Oldwheels - Buy a can of starting fluid (ether, $1.50 from Autozone). Open the airbox and spray a 2-3 second burst into the air intake hose (you may need to move the air filter out of the way).

If the car still doesn't start, you may have flooding. Remove the plugs and check to see how wet they are. Clean and dry them if necessary. It may help to leave the plugs out for a while to allow excess fuel in the cylinder to vaporize.

    Good luck.

i got it started, cranked the pi*** out it. Kept firing more and more until it fianally started. Took about two minutes of cranking. After a 10-15 seconds of running it ran perfect. Drove it a ways and seemed fine. Pleanty of power, no misses.
    Now I'm baffled.

      oldwheels,

I had nearly the same thing happen to me this morning in MA, not quite as
      cold -5F though.

I think it is related to air/fuel mixture issues, and when it is so cold, the fuel is not vaporized as well, also dirty injectors may play a role, and any air leaks in the intake side are magnified.

When this happened to me a couple of weeks ago, I ran some Techron through it and that helped significantly. Now I'm seeing this starting problem only at 0F or below, whereas before I was seeing it at 10F.

Check all your intake hoses for leaks or cracks, clean your connectors, and put some cold start gas treatment in for good measure.

I was thankful that the old girl whipped that engine round and round till it
caught on 1 cyl out of 4, then 2 cyl out of four, then 3 out of four, until it
finally was firing on all 4 and then it ran great. Big sigh of relief but a
      bit nerve-wracking too!

Please post back with any news of what works for you...

      Regards,

      TomD

Turning slow at -15 degrees F would indicate either low battery strength or thick cold oil wouldn't it?

Parking the car in a warmer area or putting some heating under the hood at night would help definitely.

Possible fuel icing? Have you ran and fuel drier treatments through it recently?
If it has iced, you may have to roll the car into someplace warm or wait for it to warm up outside to get it to start.
