Broken Fog lights 200

So, I have driven my 1983 244 turbo about 150 miles and I manged to break both pristine fog light lenses as I was pulling out of a driveway today. Both lenses are craked and need to be replaced. Where should I look for repalcements? What can I do in the future in inusre that I won't do something so stupid again.

Thanks for any information and happy bricking.

Sadly, no insurance against doing something stupid...between my wife and I we've kept Hella's foglight division quite profitable. We're getting better, though - been a few yrs now since the last crunch into a parking lot curb.

As for stones and small road debris, I have had great success in covering the lenses with that thick plastic film that is sold in 'winter country' auto parts shops for just this purpose. And it seals and repairs cracked lenses if they're not TOO bad.

Other than remembering that they're down there and you need to be more careful ...

Some fog lamps have metal mesh (stone guards) over the lenses -- that might help a little, but I think if you hit a really rigid piece of ice, it will just break the fog light right off its mount even with the guards.

But there is one better thing. Many years ago, I recall that BMWs used to have, for their fog lights that hung down under the bumper, a metal frame -- it was U-shaped, surrounding the lights a little ahead of them. So anything like a curb or a hunk of ice would hit that heavy metal frame, instead of the glass. Of course, you might bend the frame back and smash the lamp anyway, but a light hit might just remind you to stop?
