Neighbors turned me in for collecting Volvos 200

Got a visit from Codes Enforcement. Seems a neighbor(s) turned me in because they don't like all the cars in my driveway. Must be "registered and drivable". Officer somewhat surprised when I said all were in very good condition, collectable, drivable; and I will get plates for all of them. I think my lecture on the atributes of the 242 GT, various Turbos, Flat hood, etc were lost on her. Apparently "classic" cars are not appreciated by all.
Funny they don't say anything about the abandon house next door!

volvo meet at your place. 200

you should really have a get together of all the volvo people in your area.. fill the driveway and the entire street with volvos.

the neighbour would think they are going crazy.

That's a cryin shame. Right now there are no neighbors within sight of my Volvo farm. If anyone builds a house and starts comlpaining, I think I'll take up skeet shooting, at 5AM. Mebee get me some lights so I can do it at night too.

Fortunately I'm a mile off the blacktop. Only two of four are running w/tags. The 76 242 is so rusty, when I jacked it up to take off the tires and put it up on blocks, the tranny crossmember fell out on one side.
I succumbed to my kids request to use it as a spaceship. Went to check on them and their three cousins, visiting one cold Saturday afternoon. Found five sweaty kids wearing socks and t-shirts in a steamed up volvo, shouting and pointing, going to Mars.

I had to put up a fence to be proactive about it to hide some cars behind. Here, if they are just not in view and cannot easily be seen they will leave you alone. Some poor folks down the street have stacked cinder blocks right in front of their car to block a view of the license plate and windsheild sticker. The inspector cannot go one their property without permission and therefore cannot prove that the car is unregistered.
It goes both ways. There are some folks who will just let car after car rot on their property which I would argue is not good for anybody. My main concern is all of the crap and fluids that will end up on the ground; everyone around here has shallow wells for their water supply.
Last time the code person was here I was out in the yard playing with my kids and this person pulls up in a rusted van and started taking pictures of what I thought was me and my kids as we stood behind the cars, but she said she was taking pictures of my cars. I was not too friendly at all; I ask her for ID: she said she forgot it, I asked to see a business card: she said she didn't have one, I asked for her full name: and she didn't want to give it to me. Again, I was not too friendly with her as she would not identify herself, but tried not to be a totall jerk and make an enemy at the same time.
You could buy car covers and put them on all of your cars and post your property as private property. If you have a big yard you could put them all behind a fence which would probably be the best bet. In NY it is such a pain to get plates as you have to carry insuarance at all times, which is lame if you want to have plates so that your car can just sit there as it would be pretty expensive.
You should read the law very carefully as the cars may just have to be in drivable condition to be legal. And there is probably an allowance of at least one unlicensed car.
But what it really sounds like is that you need to sell your GT to me!

Neighbors turned me in for collecting Volvos 200

Reminds me of a story . . . my own. Went away on a trip. Told my elderly neighbor who I always helped. I just had sprinkler timers installed, before I departed. I always looked after my neighbor's yard and house, while he was away. My trip was extended. When I returned home, my water was shutoff, at the meter. I had a summons on my door for uncut grass, unsightly, or something like that. It was a misdemeanor. I had to go down to Shitty Hall in the Rich Republican town, where Actor Steve Martin attended high school, bring them my passport, and pay to have my water reconnected. All was forgiven. I went to my neighbor and asked him, if you thought my grass was getting too long, in the front yard, why not just mow it or turn off the water and let it die?

Ya got love do gooders, nosey neighbors, and wanna be cops. America is full 'em, that is why this US citizen chooses to live overseas.

Ditto here...had to have four 245's hauled off to the crusher two years ago. Nearest neighbor is a mile away, with only six homes within four miles. In another town a homeowner had over twenty (20) vehicles of all sorts in his front, side and back yard. His home was in town on a main street. He took the issue to court, and won. His defense being that it was his collection/ hobby/ sorce of income/ etc. to this day all the vehicles are still there....mostly covered with weeds in the growing season. Go figure.

Around here, it's not neighbors that are a problem, it's the real estate agents. If they are having trouble selling a house, those turkeys will call code enforcement on every house in the area to try to make the dog of a house they're trying to sell more valuable. Nasty little trick.

Get a copy of the by-law and see what it takes to get it changed.

In our community, I tried to get our by-law changed to allow collector cars behind approved screening. If someone can have a dumpsrte behind a sereened area, why not a car?

    BTW - I was unsuccessful

Next time you are at a car show look for the guy selling 'novelty' plates. These are license plates that look like your states plates but are replicas for show only.Sometimes people have them spell out little messages for their show cars.Of course they are not legal for street use but will fool your neighbors into thinking your have current plates on your project or parts cars. How do I know- I have a few here and there.

My brother used to live in Sumter and he had a couple of Corvairs, which meant there was oil on the driveway all the time! Maybe your neighbors are just red necks who don't like all that foreign steel in your driveway.
I'm lucky that my 3 car garage can hold 4 cars, leaving the station wagon in the driveway. I told my wife to look for a retirement home where I can build a 40X60 out building with a heated floor! It's not barefoot weather up here, except in July.

That's so stupid that they're going to make you do that. There's no place where it says you can't own these cars. It is your private property, therefore you are allowed to own these cars. You're not doing anything illegal! I'd tell the cop to screw!

        It's called zoning... 200

You are correct, no law is against ownership. But there are zoning laws restricting the number of cars parked in the yard/driveway, running or not, licensed or not. This keeps neighborhoods from turning into junk yards.

Yes, getting plates for the Volvos is a good start. If that is all that's needed for compliance to your area's laws, you are all set.

A deeper issue is why the neighbor mentioned this to the police? Any bad blood there?

I'd like my neighbors to feel they can come straight to me with a common problem, rather than involving the authorities. if you know which neighbor complained, maybe it's time for some plain talk.

Luckily I have very good neighbors. But the neighborhood patrol can get the city to do a code enforcement, even if they are registerd and inspected, if they don't move for awhile. I got around it by putting a wooden gate across the driveway (detached garage behind the house). If it is out of sight of the street, they can't touch it. My real limiting factor though is my wife. Won't let me have more than 3 cars that don't run.

LOL I can't have more than a dozen wheeled contrivances of any sort (including hers)! OK, bikes are exempt, but i have to count the trailers.

I've been through that wringer several times. At one point I had three storage units so I could "legally" keep them.

The first time I went down to our public library to look up the codes cited. Yup, no derilict vehicles allowed on private property zoned (alphabet here but mine was one of them).

      Also:

      No more than four chickens.
No hogs, cattle, sheep or horses (what, I can have an elephant???)
No vegatative debris (whoops, what about all those compost bins the city was givin' out?).
      ETC...

Recently there was a monster flap about the "sudden" proliferation of RV's on city streets and driveways in town... Yup, they banned them unless they were behind a fence.

This is a joke right? You're really not allowed to keep cars on your own drives? I suppose we are quite lucky in the UK then. If we want to keep a car off the road, we just need to notify the licencing authority (nationwide body) who issue a certificate. It doesn't need to be roadworthy either.

Good luck in subduing the anti Volvo lobby in your town!
