960 engine question 900

Hello all, I just bought a '94 960 with 160k on the clock. Absolutely great car, but has some issues :(
First, the car was standing for a year, I changed the oil, cleaned the spark plugs, checked the water and started the engine. It was running rough and uneven but after a few minutes it was better, but I think it's still running on 5. No problem, time to change the plugs and check the spark. Here comes the worse part. I guess the engine has hydraulic tappets (please confirm it) and since it's been standing for a year some of the tappets seized because after 15 minutes idling the engine is still very noise esp. around the no.1 and 4 cylinders. Or maybe I have sticking valves. I'm new to Volvos, but this engine is very similar to my Jags straight six engine.
Second, I can't open the boot. There's a slight ding on the boot-lid around the locking mechanism and since it's a sedan I can't fold down the rear seats. Is there any trick to open it?
Third, the seat memory seems inop. I can move the seats but can't save the settings into it's memory. When I push the mem+number buttons should there be any chime or something?
Thank you in advance.
Wal

your engine does have hydraulic lifters.there's a chance the lifters are not fully pumping up.when i aquired mine it go thru fits of loud ticking, especially at idle.after some highway driving in the 3 position(to keep the rpm's up)it finally quieted down and has been fine since.if i start it up cold and let it idle i will sometimes get a light tick, but it goes away at take off.like they say on the bmw bd. i'm on(i also have a 635csi),drive it like you hate it,stay away from red line though.your timing belt has been replaced,RIGHT?
cant help you on the other 2 issues.

960 engine question 900

Just a little update. The 1st cylinder is not working. There's fuel, there's spark, but maybe not enough compression. I'll test it tomorrow. Could the be the result of a sticking valve or a non-working tappet? I checked the error codes on the diagnostic connector, A1 was 1-1-1, A2 was 1-1-3, A3 was 1-1-1.

Check for an intake manifold gasket leak at cylinder #1. Very common if you have the 'orange' gasket. I use propane to check, it's easy, neat and I have a 4 ft. hose w/nozzle attached to my tank.
