need some turbo knowledge 900 1993

I've owned an '86 240 for fifteen years, and I'm about to acquire a '93 940 Turbo. Given my knowledge of the 240, I figure that the main thing I'm going to need to learn about is the turbo. I'd appreciate if anyone can shed light on my questions here:

1) I found a chart on the Gothenburg Bible website with a chart of turbo models. It's hard to read but I believe it says the '93 940 has a Mitsubishi TD04H. Is this correct?

2) I've read the Bentley 240 book Turbo chapter, which has a lot of good information, but I'm wondering how well it applies to the '93 940. Can anyone tell me which sections/pages do or don't apply readily? Do the sections regarding intercooling apply to my 940? (I ask since Gothenburg indicates mine is also water-cooled).

3) I've looked briefly at the FAQ, which also appears to have a lot of good information. I understand better however if I can look at line drawings or pictures while trying to understand procedures. Does anyone have drawings or pictures that show/identify the various components of a '93 940 turbo system?

4) From previous posts, I've gathered that short of buying the official Volvo maintenance manuals, the Haynes UK 900 book is the best. Does this book cover my turbo in good detail?

5) Are there "zero-mile" cleaning procedures that I should perform on the turbo when I get it? One old posting referenced the "Oil Return Line O-Ring Leak Repair" in the FAQ; are there others?

need some turbo knowledge 900 1993

    Hi,

re Q2, not sure if I misunderstood your meaning, so forgive me if I'm teaching Granny....

93 turbos were fitted with Intercoolers (like a mini radiator at the front of the car), the function of which is to cool the turbo pressured air on the way to the inlet manifold. Colder denser air is better for efficient combustion.

The 93 Mitsubishi turbos were water cooled as well as being "oil cooled". By which I mean that they are connected to the cooling system (hoses run from turbo to radiator). This leads to better cooling in operation and also helps reduce temperature of the turbo when the engine is switched off as the heat is convected through the coolant.

Turbo on my 93 is original and has done 205k miles. I think this down to regular oil changes.. my car runs on mineral oil, so I can't comment on use of synthetic, but I think it is the general consensus on the Board that synthetic gives far better protection to turbos due to the lack of deposit build up.

    Hope that helps,
    Paul.

    1. Various models have various turbos, but all those post-1992 are nearly identical.
    2. I am not sure when the 240 stopped being sold with a turbo, hence some of the Bentley information might be applicable but not all. The changes in cooling, etc. were material.
    3. A drawing in the FAQ is a great idea, which I don't have at present.
    4. For the turbo, the official manuals are not that helpful. Haynes UK for the 900 is fine. Chilton's generic 90-93 240/740/940/960 has some useful info and is cheap used.
    5. Try a bottle of AutoRX cleaner to swab out the entire lubrication system. Change to synthetic oil. Make sure your coolant is changed. Keep the turbo hoses free from exterior oil. And make sure the engine breathing system is clean.
