Diesel stalling problem 200

Hi, I'm new to this board, but need help with my car, and no one seems to have any info for me. I'm the owner of an '82 260 with the D24 engine, and it's been stalling on me for seemingly no reason. It never happens when I've been driving alot, only when I've been idling for a little bit, and happens if the engine is cold or warm. The engine will first make a sound like something rattling around in a tin can, then the rpms drop until the car eventually stalls. I can't for the life of me cause it to happen (i.e. to show people) nor prevent it (save for stomping on the gas in neutral, that seems to stay the stall for a minute or so, but it ALWAYS comes back), eveything I've tried has no effect. I'm beginning to get really worried, any ideas?

I'd be looking first @ the fuel side.

Filter / clean, well sealed
Lift pump / propper function

Were this a pre Duramax GM, I'd be looking to replace the lift (supply) pump.

That said, there are a couple others here with quite a bit of expierence with the same engine you have. Best of luck.

Hmm... I bled the fuel filter awhile ago, about a table spoon's worth of water came out. I've never changed nor removed/inspected the fuel filter, but I'll get right on that.

As for the fuel lift pump (is it not an electric pump near the fuel tank itself?), I'm not sure where that is.

Change the fuel filter first. Next , how cold is it there? diesel begins to gel at around 35 deg f. You may need to add some anti gel additive like Howes lubricator or Power service ( if using power service for the first time have a few spare fuel filters handy, it will clean all the old junk of the tank walls fast and clog your filter mabey more than once )

The fuel lift pump is part of the mechanical injection pump on that engine, sometimes folks add an electric pump before it to help lift from the tank, , but usually stalling isn't indicated there.

make sure there are no holes or cracks in your fuel lines.

If you don't know when it was done last, drain your tank completely and refill with fresh fuel

When was the last time the valves were adjusted? should be every 15000 miles.

Have you tried running a good injector cleaner recently like Diesel Purge?

I don't see him hang out here too much, if at all, but Tom Bryant is quite the Diesel and SU guru. Sign up with swedishbricks, he's on there quite a bit.
