Stereo problem, please advise

Hi there,
I am starting to address all the problems with my new 1994 940 wagon. I think it is time to tackle a stereo problem that I have been having. The radio works but I have to really fuss with the volume in order to hear anything. When I do get sound, it will sometimes cut out when I go over a bump in the road. Then I have to start the fiddling process again. The grill on the driver's side speaker is gone. I don't need to upgrade the stereo, I just want to hear it and hear it consistently. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be. I know nothing about this stuff. Do you think it is the speakers? Do I need new ones? If so, where do I buy them.

Many thanks!

Not suprised if it's the volume control potentiometer. The next time it goes, out, tap it a few times. If it you get some sound then, that's your problem ... and it's cheaper to get a replacement at Crutchfield than it is to dismantle the entire deck to desolder and clean a component you prolly will not easily find a replacement part for.

There are a number of posts in the archives re how to clean the pot with compressed air and electronic parts spray cleaner. Check the search function.
You might be able to solve your problem for about 2 bucks' worth of spray and not have to mess with an aftermarket hookup.
That said, if the radio now works better, put the money you were ready to spend into upgrading speakers. Best bet on speakers is to take yours out and measure both diameter and depth, then go shopping online with somebody like Crutchfield's (good folks, but sometimes their program for finding you speakers to match your car is significantly off). While you have your speakers out, make sure which ones are 4-ohm and which are 8-ohm ( they should be stamped or labelled on the back of the magnet). Polks and Infinity are good brands, reasonably priced. However, that's just my opinion--check the earch function under ...best speakers... for a variety of heated opinions.
