Cutting out intermittently. 900 1992

i dont drive the wifes 92 960 very often.while coasting(not touching the gas)between 45-55mph only, and when slightly accellerating there's a jerk in the drivetrain.i've not been able to tell if it's the engine or the transmission.when we purchased her 960 2 yrs. ago it was very slightly noticeable and replacing the plugs(volvo 3 electrode)seemed to help.i've checked grounds and replaced CMP sensor last winter for 3-1-4 codes.two,A1 codes i have now(been cleared)1-2-4 & 1-4-3 have not helped.i've disconnected the kickdown plug on the throttle cable, replaced the mode switch, and replaced the TPS with a known good one.
the wife will not inform me of any problem on her car as long as it starts and moves down the road.spending $$$$$ on maint. is a waste of money in her eyes.she's convinced everyone i'm a fanatic.i mere'ly ask"when's the the last time you had to walk home"?'nough said on that.

I had noticed a similar hesitation within the last few months. No codes were ever set. In my annual cleaning and tightening of the connectors under the hood, the one to the temp. sender at the back of the head was loose and would not get tight. I ended up soldering a new one on from an extra wire harness I have, that cured the jerks. Thinking that maybe that connection was intermittant and the computer would occasionally get a reading that was not correct and alter the fuel mixture for a few seconds.

Might be worth looking into.

you know jbowers,i noticed that the tach also intermittently does not indicate actual engine speed, when it does that it usually stays between 1 & 1.5k and doesn't move as it should.could this be a symtom of the problem?i dont drive her car enough to know all that is malfunctioning.

Dear dm960,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Glad your other half does not manage an airline!

This sounds as if it could be mechanical. I recall a post, which had to do with a clunking sound. It turned out that a torque convertor bolt had worked loose.

This might be the result of something being loose, that shouldn't be. Before chasing electrical leads (pun intended), it might be worthwhile checking to make sure that all drive train mounting items are secure.

Happy Holidays and every warm, best wish for a Good, Healthy New Year.

Yours faithfully,

spook

Can you tell if the lock-up lets go as soon as the throtle is closed? It is supposed to disengage as soon as the TPS says "throtle is closed".

Does the tach do something when the jerk occurs?

Just my first thoughts....
