240 voltage regulator question 200

I took the voltage regulator off of my 86 240 wagon today to try and switch it with another and I noticed that the two long contacts on it are worn unevenly. Could this be the cause of the no charging problem? If not, how difficult is it to rebuild my old alternator?

Thanks,
Dave

The springs behind the brushes are not precision engineered or matched. They will apply different force, resulting in different wear. No problem/faut.

    240 voltage regulator question 200

Every set I have ever take out of a 240 alternator had brushes worn unevenly. Why, I do not have a clue.

If both brushes are at least 5mm long, charging won't be affected.

If a brush gets really short, it is possible that there will be sparking between the brush and its slip ring. That can cause pitting, making the contact even worse. Pitting can be repaired, but it's not easy and can be done only if the ring thickness after sanding down is within spec.

Order a new set and install them. Then check the voltage. At the battery is should be around 14 volts with the engine running.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

      Hi Bob,

By the brushes, do you mean the two prongs coming off of the alternator? Mine are definately longer than 5mm. If this isn't the problem, is there anything else that I can replace in the alternator to make it work again?

      Thanks,
      Dave

Was the alternator putting out anything above 12 Volts at all?

Well the battery is also getting weak so I guess that could have been a factor. I was getting less than 12 volts at the battery with it running (kinda like the car was running off of the battery with no help from the alternator). Can you recommend any good batteries for this thing?

      Thanks,
      Dave

Don't blame the Battery. It just starts the car. The Alternator is supposed to run the car AND charge the battery.

With engine running, measure voltage at Alternator and then at the Battery. If Battery measurement is significantly lower (i.e. 1.5 to 2 volts), suspect a poor connection between the two.

Check this thread from a couple of days ago.

Well I'm going to blame the battery because I know it's also bad. Guess I need to replace it first to do some more precise diagnosing of the charging problem. The current battery is a cheap one that someone stuck in before I bought the car. It doesn't even fit the car ( too tall and doesn't have the ledges on the lower part for the battery hold down clamp to anchor onto. My question was: Do you know what the correct size battery is for this '86 240? I'll probably buy an Interstate battery for it.

          Thanks,
          Dave
